Trump Slaps New Tariffs on Canada in Response to Ad Row

In a bold move, US President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on Canadian imports by 10% following an advert in Ontario that was critical of his trade policies. The controversial advert featured former US President Ronald Reagan and aired ahead of the highly anticipated World Series baseball championship, drawing Trump's ire. Trump labelled the ad as a "fraud" on social media, accusing Canadian officials of deliberate misrepresentation.

The backdrop to this escalation began when Trump withdrew from trade negotiations with Canada, causing Ontario Premier Doug Ford to reconsider his province's advert campaign. The ad, sponsored by the Ontario government, utilised Reagan's words from a 1987 speech on foreign trade. In response to Trump's tariff increase, Ford announced he would halt the ad campaign after consulting Prime Minister Mark Carney to potentially resume trade discussions.

The tension has drawn comments from Canada’s trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc, who emphasised the importance of constructive engagement and collaboration between the US and Canadian governments. This tariff hike is significant, as Canada remains the only G7 nation without a deal since Trump implemented steep tariffs on major trading partners. Already, the US enforces a 35% levy on Canadian goods, with specific industries like metals and automobiles facing even higher duties.

Looking forward, Trump and Carney are set to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Malaysia, though Trump stated he has no plans to meet with Carney. The tariff increase comes ahead of a crucial US Supreme Court case next month, which will determine the constitutionality of Trump's tariff policies. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has expressed hope that diplomatic negotiations will prevail to resolve the escalating trade tensions.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump announced a 10% tariff increase on all Canadian imports amidst an ad controversy.
  • Ontario's Premier Doug Ford halted the ad campaign following talks with Canada's Prime Minister.
  • Trade discussions remain strained as Canada is the only G7 nation without a new agreement with the US.

The context is that Reagan has been consistently against tariffs, while occasionally imposing targeted tariffs! 🤣

Pathetic and embarrassing to have such a ridiculous con man as president.

It really was a dumb move by the Ontario Premier. His commercial has undermined Carney's position that, previously, was looking pretty good actually.

The issue is that Carney's ad is foreign election interference by definition. It was a political statement directed at US voters to influence their opinions. Foreign powers who engage in election interference are subject to significant economic sanctions. The truth of the statements are irrelevant here. Carney has no valid reason for releasing political statements to US voters, and Canada is going to suffer significantly for his poor judgement.

Note: this doesn't mean the US doesn't also have a long history of interfering in foreign elections, but you can't avoid reality. If you are going to engage in this type of dubious behavior, you can't do it openly without being prepared to pay the price. Carney screwed up.

Carney?

So a foreign country can't show that tariffs are dumb?

Carney didn't release that ad. The Ontario provincial government, led by Doug Ford, did.

The left used to act hopping mad when the notion of foreign election interference was the outrage of the day on Maddow, Scarborough, the view. Another provably dishonest stance due to irrational hatred for Trump.

I'm wondering if the liberals globalist world has any differences from the Reagan era? 🤣

Gentle hint - America was still Great under Reagan before the left dropped their britches and fouled all over it.

Not acting like a statesman, but like a child... (Also, what do exporters in BC, Alberta, Quebec, etc., have to do with this?

What's bold about it?

It's about the only thing Trump does, besides whining about "raw earfs" and doing the TACO.

So, the Ontario Provincial releases a good-will video showing how compatible and in-synch our nations were before Trump, and of course Trump goes ballistic. Election interference?  LOL. What election?  If it's up to Trump there won't be anymore elections.

That's ridiculous. What a totally lame accusation. The midterms aren't until 2026.

Russia holds fixed elections.

All of Putin's serious opponents are jailed, exiled, or murdered.

Some token names who are all pro Putin themselves are put up for show to fool people like you.

Ukraine is in an existential war fighting for their survival.

They can't hold an election under those circumstances under their constittion.

Of course Putin and his lovers (like you right?) would love to see Ukraine hold an election under those conditions so they would have another opportunity to try to install a puppet.

Nice try. No cigar. People can smell Kremlin propaganda a mile away.

Carney Gives Muted Response to Trump’s Pledge to Hike Tariffs

He added that his trip to Asia is focused on diversifying Canada’s trade relationships, with an overall aim of doubling exports to non-US markets over the next decade.

“We can’t control the trade policy of the United States,” Carney said in response, before departing for Asia on Friday. He said the two sides had been making headway, and added Canada is ready to “build on that progress when the Americans are ready to have those discussions.”

In the meantime, Carney is using the nine-day Asia trip — during which he will also visit Singapore and attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in South Korea — to promote Canadian trade with the region.

Trump’s Attack on Ontario’s Reagan Ad Helped Amplify Its Reach

“The funny irony here is that in the wake of Trump’s post, now the whole world knows what Reagan said about tariffs as opposed to this just being targeted ads by the Ontario government,” said Bank of Nova Scotia economist Derek Holt.
