Trump Slaps New Tariffs on Canada in Response to Ad Row

The issue is that Carney's ad is foreign election interference by definition. It was a political statement directed at US voters to influence their opinions. Foreign powers who engage in election interference are subject to significant economic sanctions. The truth of the statements are irrelevant here. Carney has no valid reason for releasing political statements to US voters, and Canada is going to suffer significantly for his poor judgement.

Note: this doesn't mean the US doesn't also have a long history of interfering in foreign elections, but you can't avoid reality. If you are going to engage in this type of dubious behavior, you can't do it openly without being prepared to pay the price. Carney screwed up.

It wasn't 'Carney's ad' - it was the premier of the largest province Ontario that commissioned and placed the ad (equiv to a US governor). Agree it was a dumb move and not thought out. Now it has undermined Carney's negotiating position.

It was a statement of fact issued to enlighten members of the American public.

How can it be called election interference when Trump/MAGA doesn't plan to have any more elections?

Haha...influencing elections by revealing truths. terrible. We cannot have that in the good ole USA. Dirty tricks, lies and subterfuge are the way to get ahead.

Once more Trump acts like a spoilt little snot nosed kid, who failed to get his own way and threatens to take the ball and go home

I'm waiting for the MAGA types to appear to state that this is Trump playing 4D chess.

But think about his argument for a few seconds... He claims that it was done to influence the Supreme Court's decision in a case disputing his ability to invoke IEEPA to justify tariffs. The irony is that presumably he is likely using IEEPA to justify this new tariff on Canada. But the IEEPA explicity prohibits it's use to regulate, directly or indirectly, it's use with regard to information or informational materials.

Expect a TACO...,

Yes, "We".

Those people who can think for themselves and who are not told to spew up propaganda on a daily basis, as it might upset their master, who will stamp his feet, throw his toys out of his pram, cause him to sulk for days and impose yet more pointless tariffs on US citizens.

I posted the direct quote. “You see, at first, when someone says, ``Let's impose tariffs on foreign imports,'' it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works -- but only for a short time. What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition. So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.
The memory of all this occurring back in the thirties made me determined when I came to Washington to spare the American people the protectionist legislation that destroys prosperity. Now, it hasn't always been easy. There are those in this Congress, just as there were back in the thirties, who want to go for the quick political advantage, who will risk America's prosperity for the sake of a short-term appeal to some special interest group, who forget that more than 5 million American jobs are directly tied to the foreign export business and additional millions are tied to imports. Well, I've never forgotten those jobs. And on trade issues, by and large, we've done well. In certain select cases, like the Japanese semiconductors, we've taken steps to stop unfair practices against American products, but we've still maintained our basic, long-term commitment to free trade and economic growth.”

Carney?

So a foreign country can't show that tariffs are dumb?

Or cite a direct US President's words ... if it conflicts with trump's/Project 2025 official government goals?

Great! Now Canada needs to cut off their oil and electricity supplies to the US and when in several northern states the lights go out they can call Trump to complain!

The ASEAN summit laid out the microcosm of Carney vision of Canada relationship with America and how ASEAN feel about Canada. In the past whenever both countries attend a major summit, it is expected that they will have some sort of bilateral meeting and a photo-op to demonstrate the close relationship. There were none. Both avoided each other.

Carney was given a red carpet and ceremonial welcome by Malaysia which normally only extended to big powers. He was also given opportunity to lay out Canada trade policies in an interview which was well attended. He laid out a masterful vision of more ties with asean on trade and energy diversification off the reliance on America. His knowledge of the matter is astounding.

It is definitely clear that  Carney has a strategy to deal with Trump and have look pass his hissy fit and erratic behavior

Trump’s Attack on Ontario’s Reagan Ad Helped Amplify Its Reach

“The funny irony here is that in the wake of Trump’s post, now the whole world knows what Reagan said about tariffs as opposed to this just being targeted ads by the Ontario government,” said Bank of Nova Scotia economist Derek Holt.

That's the Taylor Swift effect. She became even more famous in the whole world after Trump bashed her! 🙂

The left used to act hopping mad when the notion of foreign election interference was the outrage of the day on Maddow, Scarborough, the view. Another provably dishonest stance due to irrational hatred for Trump.

To me personally trump’s having a snit over an accurate statement by a previous administration on video in the real world costs me money when I buy lumber or anything else from our northern neighbor.Kinda like the 20$a pound steak and coffee beeing so expensive…..a direct result of trump getting mad because that country stood by its laws and constitution…..we had a trade surplus with Brazil btw……hes infantile and just sucks a a president in my view.

Trump's Unexpected 'No-Look Pass' at Japanese Flag Leaves Takaichi Stunned

During his tour of Asia, U.S. President Donald Trump visited the State Guest House in Motoakasaka, Tokyo, Japan, on October 28. At the state visit welcoming ceremony with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, an unexpected incident occurred that drew attention.

In the order of respect for the Japanese flag, President Trump passed by the flag without acknowledging it, despite Prime Minister Takaichi's gesture. Prime Minister Takaichi positioned herself to be photographed in front of the flag of the other country, but President Trump was seen walking straight ahead without looking.

(...)

On this day, foreign media outlets such as the Associated Press reported that President Trump briefly lost his sense of direction during the honor guard inspection, and Prime Minister Takaichi was seen placing her hand on his waist to guide him. Another incident followed during the protocol ceremony for the national flags of both countries. When President Trump spontaneously gave a hand salute toward the already hoisted Stars and Stripes, Prime Minister Takaichi reflexively placed her hand over her heart in return.

However, during the subsequent order of respect for the Japanese flag, President Trump passed by the flag without acknowledging it, despite Prime Minister Takaichi's gesture. Prime Minister Takaichi positioned herself in front of the other country's flag to be photographed, but President Trump was seen walking straight ahead without looking. Most notably, Prime Minister Takaichi's bewildered expression was clearly captured in the on-site videos and photos.

Generally, a state visit is the highest-level diplomatic event, held at the official invitation of a head of state to a foreign leader, and the welcoming ceremony is a symbolic occasion reflecting the dignity of bilateral relations. Typically, after the head of state is received, the military band and honor guard line up, and the national anthems of both countries are played with both national flags hoisted. However, on this day, President Trump appeared to forget this protocol and acted accordingly (...)

I beg the MAGA types to read Hans Christian Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes.

If only they had paid attention at school.

I'm not saying that everything he does is bad. After all, a broken clock is right twice a day. But come on, the man is an uncouth savage. A pretender.

America was still Great under Reagan before the left dropped their britches and fouled all over it.

So would that include Ford, two Bush's - father and son - with their 'thousand points of (BS) light' and wars in Iraq (2) and Afghanistan that claimed millions of lives? Offshoring American jobs started with Reagan's repositioning and advocacy of 'global trade'. Yeah, your sh!t don't stink, does it pal?

Your 'rightist' Republican criminal friends got very rich from investing in U.S. companies that moved their factories overseas. Now you're all whining about it and blaming Democrats. Funny in'it. They're all still rich amd most others are not.

Will see another hissy fit and ketchup stain on the wall when Trump return from Asia. Senate has voted to block Trump's tariffs on Canada for the second time. This latest after senate block his tariffs on Brazil. The resistance is now brewing inside the Republicans which seem to find their spine to thwart Trump's arbitrary policies to destroy the economy.

You mean the context of a US president who unilaterally uses tariffs to punish the country's allies and trade partners?

Portland, Chicago, and vendetta campaigns against political opponents using DOJ as a weapon.  There is a whole lot of context out there that the folks seem to be avoiding.

MAGA types get all excited when Trump repackages old agreements as new and investments that aren't really investments, but lines of credit, as big wins. But the countries play along, as they know it's just for show in a game against China.

Considering how much and how often President Donald J Trump lies, I guess he does not like seeing

an old Clip of Ronald Regan telling the truth about Tarrifs.    I like the words,   Boycott the USA Better myself.

I will do so as long as Trump and his gang are in power.

Damn, I wanted the courts to shut down the tariffs. This makes it look the Trump's government is accomplishing something. At least it shows the cracks expanding in the GOP ranks.

Good. The canadian wokes will have to sell their sticky maple syrup elsewhere and crash the prices on those hefty Canada Goose winter jackets.

Yeah, saw that. It's a good start. The Democrats continue to be nowhere  though..

It really was a dumb move by the Ontario Premier. His commercial has undermined Carney's position that, previously, was looking pretty good actually.

Apparently the premier of British Columbia is planning to go ahead with a similar ad aimed at a U.S. audience over tarrifs on softwood lumber that is used quite extensively in U.S. housing construction. Again, I'm not sure what that will accomplish. I mean is it a call to action? What does he expect Americans to do once they see it. Write to Congress? To my thinking it has more downside that goodside. And, of course, it could end up with a similar over-reaction from Trump like what followed the Ontario ad. Coincidentally, I saw a good meme the other day that had Reagan wearing a Toronto Blue Jays' shirt. It also said maybe the result could be another 10 % hit.
