So they've been here a month? Good luck to them but they really need to be here a year or so to experience the joys and the frustrations of Thailand before they pass judgement.

Just 2 another dreamers who will be hit by reality when the money is gone.

Bang on the money , trouble is there will be thousands like em that have zero idea about Thailand and will berate others living in the uk hell ( apparently  )

Ofcourse when reality hits in the form of a horrendous accident or some awful thing like cancer comes along they will be familiar with the online gofundme global insurance policy .

Having said all that I wish em both well and promise not to say I told you so when they creep back into the uk a bit later on with their tails between their legs

Far too early to judge. I first arrived in Thailand in 1962, retired here in 1993, and I still have a lot to learn.

Why? She is more tattooed than a bargirl and I expect that he's no catch.

Look like a couple of modern day hippies, probably really here for the weed shops. Hope they still pay the NI contributions or pensions will be reduced, if they get that far. This -I sold up, bought a one way ticket and moved to Thailand aged 25, my rent is only X amount, please subscribe to my channel rarely ends well.

"""The guy is 50 years old and competing with housing meant for students and the working class Thais."""

I'm 80 married to Thai and live in a 2BR ( originally UNFURNISHED ) house, YARD, etc, etc and etc,  GATED COMMUNITY. 4 major stores and others 10 - 15 minutes away, center city 25 minutes.

The "students and working class people" closest to the house are a Doctor, Bank Manager, CEO, Retired Thai Military. I pay 4500bt a month rent plus utilities.  Took us 3 years to find this place.

Feel media "filled" every day...

I also do not know the crime rate in Britain, but I hear from expats that it is bad in some parts, sadly this is happening in Australia and NZ and the USA, Europe is a mess also.

Governments have gone mad spending billions on a maniacs war that does not concern us, this has caused massive food price hikes world wide and increases for farmers who are paying double and triple for fertilizer. Then there is the petrol and LPG, all off this has caused others to hike prices, restaurants , takeaways etc. the list goes on.

Then there is the protests, unemployment ,rising house costs , electricity becoming unaffordable, rates and insurance the same, and as a pensioner you can not live in NZ any more you go backwards.

Then the government is caught up in a huge covid enquiry and people do not trust medical care or doctors now.

Then add in the cost of health care its unaffordable if your not filthy rich you have to go public, a friend of mine died because they did not operate on a melanoma for 8 weeks as the hospitals are full, In Australia they cut then out straight away, so privatization is the only answer if you can afford it, you cant get a knee replacement for 4 years on the waiting list in NZ. Muzzling people so they no longer can speak on Facebook etc. is playing havoc with people, then we could get into the housing crisis and immigration overload causing protests etc., and lastly the drug problems with meth everywhere with the main ingredient being smuggled out of china , it is a mess world wide

Young kids in NZ ram vehicles through shops every night and cant be prosecuted because they are to young.

And never seen before drive by gang murders and shootings everyday, all over the world this is happening, politicians have gone mad, stop giving Zelenski the neo Nazi money and stop the war they can sort it out themselves, I think they are all lining up for the minerals etc. which the Ukraine is very rich in, never going to happen, Putin is laughing at the fools dragging their countries into the ground.

Americas major contributor to arms is Blackrock who also were the biggest shareholders in Pfizer covid vaccines.

AI reports:

Key Crime Statistics at a Glance (Most recent reliable data)

Crime Category Thailand (Rate per 100,000 pop) United Kingdom (Rate per 100,000 pop) Which is Higher?
Homicide (Intentional) 5.9 (2021) 1.1 (2021) Thailand
Assault Data less reliable Data consistently high United Kingdom
Robbery 15.3 (2020) 88.1 (2020) United Kingdom
Theft 207.1 (2020) 2,434.5 (2020) United Kingdom
Burglary 41.5 (2020) 403.1 (2020) United Kingdom

Analysis and Important Context

1. Violent Crime: A Mixed Picture

  • Homicide: Thailand has a significantly higher homicide rate than the UK. This is often linked to regional conflicts in the deep south, organized crime, and personal disputes.

  • Assault & Robbery: The UK has a much higher rate of reported street crime, robberies, and assaults (including alcohol-related violence). Tourists in Thailand are statistically far less likely to be victims of violent mugging or random assault than in many UK cities.

2. Property Crime: A Clear Difference

This is the most striking difference. The UK has a dramatically higher rate of theft, burglary, and car crime. Petty theft like pickpocketing exists in tourist areas of Thailand, but the overall prevalence of property crime is much lower.

Gogle AI says rate of assault in UK is higher than in Thailand:

AI Overview

Official statistics indicate that
the rate of assault is higher in the UK than in Thailand, though direct comparisons are difficult due to differences in recording practices and definitions of crime between countries.
Several sources support this conclusion:
  • Anecdotal Evidence and Safety Indices: Many people living in or visiting Thailand anecdotally agree that it feels very safe regarding general violent crime. Numbeo city indices cited in one source show major UK cities like London and Birmingham having significantly higher violent crime indices than Bangkok or Chiang Mai.
  • Homicide Rates: The UK's homicide rate is approximately 1.0 per 100,000 people, which is considered "low crime" by UNODC/World Bank standards. While specific, recent, nationwide assault rates for Thailand were not available in the search results, related data suggests lower rates of serious violent crimes compared to Western countries.

I wish them luck. However, Chiang Mai is already over-run with foreigners seeking a bargain life outside their home country. It will only inflate prices even more here in the north. Soon, locals will be priced out of their own city.

Empty houses everywhere in Chiang Mai, don't think the locals need worry.

My misses just arranged a 3 bedroom furnished house rental in our gated community for 6,500bht/month to a little old Thai lady (age 60) that just retired from her government job.

That doesn't sit well with me. Maybe if he was in his 20s it would be more acceptable but this is just going to make everyone uncomfortable. Clearly this isn't what they had in mind for the DTV. I'm still guessing it's going to get restricted eventually but we'll see.

$120 per month?  He's paying 4,000 baht for a 14 square meter (20' container) cubicle.  He's getting reamed.

Looking at those stats, thank god I am in Thailand.

In 1-2 years max the dude realizes, like all I seen before arriving as couples, that he is better of being without her and dating / marrying a local. So she will be shipped off back to the UK soon enough lol.

I came across at least a dozen guys (years later) that I initially met on their honey moons over the past 1-1.5 decades. I'd guess Vietnam is a safer choice if coming with a girlfriend or wife, pretty sure actually, most expats there date other expats.

Except it is the stereotype story 95/100 times while 4/100 times it is a fat or too old girl who now plays nice. It's pretty amazing how older guys marrying them (99/100 times) are entirely blind to this somehow. This while the wives flirt behind their back to me, even now i'm mid 30s.

I guess the entire thing is that when one foreigner starts dating or marrying one, they get introduced to the world of expats and then get better options sooner or later, if it is the typical stereotype of above.

That's the rare genuine success stories, been 8 years together with one not even asked me once for more than 5K, even I do take care of bills and basics otherwise too. We rarely get to 2 double dates with other expats due to the fact the girl starts talking evil to mine 99/100 times or how she should extract more from me etc etc.

They are rare diamonds but many times the guy knows he is stuck too and the wives cheat regardless lol. Most aged long-term married expats I came across here both cheat but not admit it to each other as a couple / married couple. That's like 50% of your average Thai too.

A British couple, Roshni Ward and Louis Hunt, have relocated to Chiang Mai, Thailand, leaving behind the high costs and hectic lifestyle of East Sussex, UK. Fed up with demanding work hours and rising crime, the couple sought a more balanced and affordable life. Their move in September has led to significantly reduced living expenses, with their flat rent dropping from £1,350 to £300 per month.

While in Thailand, Ward now works as a content creator and Hunt manages an online fitness business. The cost of living, a major motivation for their move, has been a pleasant surprise with monthly expenses drastically lower. Electricity bills are around £44, and a typical taxi ride costs just £1.50. Dining out is also considerably cheaper, with a meal for two, including drinks, often under £8.

The couple were initially attracted to Thailand during a holiday, appreciating its vibrant culture and friendly locals. They have embraced a slower lifestyle where their days start with leisurely mornings before work. Ward feels significantly safer in Thailand, particularly in comparison to the UK, where crime was a concern.

In addition to financial benefits, the couple is enjoying the local culture and communities. They have taken pleasure in exploring temples, waterfalls, and elephant sanctuaries, finding the environment welcoming and the expat community supportive. They are already considering starting a family, viewing Thailand as a safer, more relaxed environment.

Ward and Hunt do not plan to return to the UK, citing the desirable mix of affordability, safety, and lifestyle in Thailand as reasons to settle there long-term. This decision underscores the growing appeal of Southeast Asia for those seeking an enhanced quality of life at a lower cost.

Key Takeaways

  • Roshni Ward and Louis Hunt moved to Chiang Mai seeking affordability and better work-life balance.
  • Monthly rent reduced from £1,350 in the UK to £300 in Thailand, with overall cheaper expenses.
  • They enjoy the slower pace, cultural experiences, and community in Thailand.

Typical youth of today. They had one holiday then thought this is the life. They will make very little money with what they are going to do in Thailand. Fitness instructors and content creators are ten a penny very low income. Wish them luck as they are no doubt going to very much need it but i am sure they will be back in the Uk within one year like the rest of the dreamers.
