A Chinese man accused of embezzling over US$7 million from a real estate firm in China has been arrested in Bangkok after seven years in hiding. Immigration police detained the suspect, identified as Wu, 40, during the early hours of 13 November 2025 outside a housing estate on Ratchaphruek Road in Thon Buri’s Taling Chan district.

Pol Col Pholsit Sutthiaat, chief investigator of Immigration Division 1, said Wu had been living a secretive life in a high-end residence worth tens of millions of baht. The arrest followed a tip-off from residents who reported a reclusive foreign man in the area. Undercover officers posing as security guards monitored the location for a week before spotting a white Volvo entering the estate to collect the suspect.

As the car returned to the compound in the early hours of 13 November, police intercepted it and arrested Wu. He presented a Vanuatu passport, which showed his permission to stay in Thailand had expired earlier in the year. Officers charged him with overstaying his visa and took him into custody for questioning at the Immigration Bureau.

During interrogation, Wu maintained that he was a Vanuatu citizen, denying any connection to China. However, checks through international law enforcement confirmed he was wanted by Chinese prosecutors in Chaozhou, Guangdong province, on corporate embezzlement charges. Interpol had issued a Red Notice for his arrest earlier this year.

Investigations by Chinese authorities revealed that in 2018, while serving as head of sales for a luxury property project, Wu deceived 48 buyers by offering “special prices” and instructing them to transfer payments into his personal account. The scheme caused losses exceeding 50 million yuan.

After fleeing China, Wu allegedly purchased Vanuatu citizenship to conceal his identity and evade capture. Thai authorities believe he had lived in Thailand for several years, relying on intermediaries and possibly falsified documents to remain undetected. Police are now investigating his assets in Thailand, including the house, a high-end vehicle and any individuals who may have helped him remain hidden.

The Immigration Bureau has confirmed that Wu will be held for further questioning before coordination begins with Chinese authorities regarding his extradition. Khaosod reported that officials said they aim to identify any Thai nationals or foreign accomplices linked to his financial activities.
