Canadian Travel Boycott to US Still Going Strong

Canadian tourists are continuing to boycott trips to the US, showing a marked decline in cross-border travel amid trade tensions. Kristy Gammon, a Nova Scotia resident, and her friends have ceased visiting the US, avoiding even travelling through it for convenience. This trend is a direct protest against policies introduced by US President Donald Trump, including tariffs affecting Canadian trade.

This October marked the tenth consecutive month of reduced Canadian travel to the US. Statistics reveal a staggering 24% drop in air travel and over a 30% decrease in car travel compared to the previous year. Canadians historically accounted for a quarter of international visitors to the US, contributing well over 700 billion Thai baht annually to the American economy, according to the US Travel Association.

The decline coincides with Trump's imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods. Trump aimed to reduce the trade deficit and demanded action against the illegal drug fentanyl inflow. Canada now faces 35% tariffs on specific items despite exemptions under NAFTA. The tariff dispute and Trump's controversial remarks about Canada becoming the "51st state" have fuelled opposition, reported the BBC.

A few US tourist spots, such as Glacier National Park in Montana, are trying to counteract this trend. They are offering special passes with discounts to attract Canadian visitors. Yet, the impact remains significant, as funding from Canadian tourists has always formed a substantial part of US tourism revenue. Despite the current decline, future events like the FIFA 2026 World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics may help in drawing international visitors, aiming to offset the deficit caused by the loss of Canadian tourists.

Key Takeaways

  • Canadian travel to the US has reduced for ten consecutive months.
  • Air travel has decreased by 24% and car travel by over 30%.
  • Tensions include trade disputes and contentious political comments.

  • Good for the Canadians. The more tourists that boycott the USA, the better.

  • The fact alone that he even offered them to become the 51st state just goes to show how delusional he really is!    If you ask a Canadian whether they’re American it’s almost an insult to them.

  • Are they sure it's not because the Canadian economy is in the toilet as a result of lefty mismanagement?

How come those girls are walking in the snow with bare feet???

I'm so sad that Kristy and her "friends" in Nova Scotia no longer want to travel even through the USA for convenience. Webfact will be following up soon on their road trip from Nova Scotia to Mexico. It should be fascinating!

I don't see this as a problem.  As far as I'm concerned, good riddance.  The US should triple the price of defending Canadian airspace (i.e. NORAD)...better yet, pay equally or defend yourselves.

Actually, the same with the NATO countries.  Those countries have been under-paying for years.   It's time they pay their fair share or the US should divorce itself from NATO.  The free loaders have been riding the coattails of the US far too long.

Who wants the leftist woke tourists anyhow ? So if the left wing radicals want to boycott America it's fine. As long as they don't come over here and start their socialist, leftist or any anti Trump absurd speeches in public.

It's not politics, it's value for money. Doubt anyone is flying to USA right now. It's like Thailand when beer prices go up 5 baht and everyone complains.

Please don't say stupid things like extreme lefties. Do better.

MAGA cheering this economy disaster? Is there a disconnect from reality? The blind loyalty to Trump’s policies are staggering and delusional.

So you don't think that lefty policies which have prevented building pipelines to export their oil and gas (other than to the USA) and all the other lefty green madness has damaged the Canadian economy?

Evidently Canada lefty policies of universal healthcare and green policies like carbon credits have created a much better living environment than USA. Canada has a better life expectancy than US. 82.7 years compare to US 78.4 years. No madness but just better policies than US.

Good one. Like the US doesn’t get anything out of NATO and Europe. Do some research.

No. The Canadian economy is suffering because Canada whored itself to the USA for too long, It allowed US companies to  buy its major companies and  natural resources. This is coming to an end as Canada  changes its focus to other markets. If the Canadians wanted to go the nationalization route, it could jump start its  changeover.  In 10 years time, the US will have a reduced presence in the Canadian economy.

To which, Trump says, "You're welcome, Canadians".

It's been going on for decades.  It's about time Canuck leaders did something about it.  Now, they get to blame Trump for what they should have done since 1945.

The oil Canada was selling was controlled by the US oil companies and was being sold at below market prices to US oil refineries. Despite Alberta's claims, the current set up of pipelines to the USA is not in  Canada's  best interests.  If the Albertans were honest, they would build a refinery in Alberta that could refine its low quality  oil. The US oil companies have been manipulating the oil industry in Canada for too long. Canada would do itself a service to get rid of them and refine its own oil.

A new LNG pipeline  opened to the  west coast in 2025 and another will be built. It would have gone through the USA, but Trump's policies enabled the new  BC pipeline to be approved. Pipelines cannot be built overnight and the reality is that Canada has abundant  electricity generation capacity unlike other countries and can rely on electricity for a large portion of its energy needs.

Quick question...  How many US citizens go to Canada to get treated, vs how many Canucks come to the US (or pay out of pocket in a different province where it's not free) to bypass the average 8 month wait for surgeries using that "universal healthcare"?

And while you're at it...  How is Trump at fault if it's been going on for decades?

Well we agree then. The Canadians should never have let the US purchase its oil and gas  sector and the Canadians who have sold  out the nation, and bribed people with short term gain,  should be treated accordingly.

If they wanted to sell it at market prices, all they had to do was build a pipeline to the East or West coast and sell it on the world market.  Lefty policies won't let that happen.

Edit:  At least they wouldn't until the lefties got a dose of The Syndrome...

No countries have a problem with Canada.

The only reason they need to protect their airspace is unfortunately for them they have a war hungry neighbor to the south.

Because the US covers their ass for homeland defense.  Canadian forces, to include their government, couldn't repel a group of Greenpeace hippies in a dinghy 😉

Any empirical study on your claim. A major US study debunked the myth of Canadian medical refugee.

US life expectancy started to decline since Covid. A large period of the pandemic during Trump’s Presidency. IMO his policies moving away from environmental protection will be harmful for the well being of the people for years to come.
