Thailand has ramped up health screenings following Ethiopia’s Marburg virus outbreak. Ethiopia confirmed cases on November 21, leading the World Health Organisation to send support teams. With a close resemblance to Ebola, the Marburg virus is causing concern due to its severe symptoms and potential for rapid spread.

The virus, part of the same family as Ebola, is transmitted from fruit bats to humans and spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals. First discovered in 1967 in Germany and Serbia, it mainly affects East and Central Africa. The Ethiopian outbreak has resulted in 17 suspected cases, nine confirmed cases, and three deaths in the Omo region. The WHO and Africa's Centres for Disease Control are actively assisting in controlling the situation.

Reacting swiftly, Thailand categorises Marburg as a dangerous communicable disease. Though no local cases have surfaced, the country's health authority has increased screenings for travellers from Ethiopia. Entry points intensify surveillance measures, and public health facilities remain vigilant for symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and haemorrhaging. According to the Department of Disease Control, any suspected cases must undergo testing, and notifications must occur within three hours.

Looking ahead, Thailand has not imposed travel bans, but it urges caution for travellers visiting the affected regions. Avoiding contact with reservoir animals and symptomatic individuals is one of the public health recommendations. Healthcare facilities should remain vigilant, especially for patients with travel history linked to outbreak zones. Travellers returning from these areas are advised to seek medical care immediately if symptoms develop. The Department of Disease Control hotline is available at 1422 for further assistance, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand increases health checks amid Ethiopia's Marburg virus outbreak.
  • Marburg shares similarities with Ebola, spreading through bodily fluids.
  • Ethiopia's outbreak includes 17 suspected cases and 3 deaths confirmed.

No entry for anyone that has been in Africa for the last month,

should be the Thai reaction , not "boosts checks".

That is the same as keeping an eye on pm2.5 > nothing happens.
