Ethiopia's Ancient Volcano Erupts After 12,000-Year Silence

A volcano in Ethiopia's northeastern Afar region has erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, creating dramatic plumes of smoke that reached up to nine miles high, according to the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC). The Hayli Gubbi volcano, situated about 500 miles northeast of Addis Ababa near the Eritrean border, became active on Sunday, sending ash clouds as far as Yemen, Oman, India, and northern Pakistan.

Hayli Gubbi stands about 1,500 feet high in the Rift Valley, where significant geological activity occurs due to the meeting of two tectonic plates. The subtropical jet stream is rapidly spreading the eruption's powerful ash clouds eastwards. Simon Carn, a professor and volcanologist at Michigan Technological University, confirmed the situation on Bluesky, highlighting the ash's rapid movement over the Arabian Sea towards northwest India and Pakistan.

The Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program noted that Hayli Gubbi had no recorded eruptions during the Holocene epoch, which began around 12,000 years ago. Local administrator Mohammed Seid reported no casualties but expressed concerns about potential economic consequences for local communities reliant on livestock herding. Seid mentioned that the ash covered many villages, affecting the availability of food for animals.

Residents of the region, accustomed to seismic activity, experienced the eruption as a dramatic event. Ahmed Abdela, a local resident, described hearing a loud sound akin to a sudden bomb, accompanied by a wave of smoke and ash. These developments have left the community bracing for possible longer-term impacts on their livelihoods.
