Brazil's Supreme Court has sentenced Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison for orchestrating a coup plot after his electoral defeat. Justice Alexandre de Moraes stated that the final judgement has been reached, and no more appeals are possible. The court found Bolsonaro guilty of leading a conspiracy against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and he will serve his sentence in Brazil.

 

Bolsonaro, 70, attempted to tamper with his ankle monitor, blaming medication for his actions. The court mandated full-time medical care for him due to his deteriorating health. He was deemed a flight risk and placed in jail after being found guilty of plans involving potential violence against political opponents, including assassination plans, reported the BBC.

 

The plot failed to gain military support, and Lula took office on 1 January 2023. A week later, Bolsonaro supporters rioted in Brasília, resulting in 1,500 arrests. Bolsonaro was also banned from holding public office until 2060. He described his trial as a "witch hunt," claiming it aimed to block his 2026 presidential run.

The plan was to assassinate Lula and his vice president with the help of the Brazilian military. The plot only failed because the military failed to support the coup attempt. To punish Brazil for prosecuting Bolsonaro, Trump slapped high tariffs on Brazil which only recently were reduced do to consumer cost-of-living backlash in the US. This is the type of leader Trump supports. Part of the argument for not incarcerating Bolsonaro is that he suffers from bouts of hiccups. Bwaaaah. I say no special treatment for this criminal or the other criminal in the White House.
