Palang Pracharath leader Prawit Wongsuwan has confirmed he will run for prime minister in the next election, potentially scheduled for February 2026. Prawit, former deputy prime minister, received overwhelming support from the party’s general caucus on 29 November 2025 to remain party leader and was named the top partisan candidate for the premiership.

During the same caucus, Trinuch Thienthong was appointed the party’s secretary-general, replacing Paibul Nititawan, who now serves as a deputy party leader. It is unclear whether Palang Pracharath will nominate additional candidates for prime minister alongside Prawit, though the party has stated it will not contest all 400 constituencies nationwide in the election.

Prawit was the sole party candidate for prime minister in the 2023 election, when Palang Pracharath won 39 constituency seats and one party-list seat, held by Prawit himself. The party was originally established with the aim of supporting former army chief-turned-coup leader Prayut Chan-o-cha as elected prime minister following the 2019 election.

Internal divisions arose when de facto Klatham leader Thammanat Prompao split from Prawit’s camp, leading half of Palang Pracharath MPs to join a coalition government led by Bhumjaithai. Thammanat was appointed deputy prime minister and agriculture & cooperatives minister, while several allies assumed other ministerial roles.

The upcoming election may also see other prominent figures, such as current Democrat Party leader and former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, deciding whether to run without running mates. Reports suggest many southern Democrat MPs may shift allegiance to either Bhumjaithai under Newin Chidchob or the Klatham coalition to seek re-election under new party tickets.

The Thai Newsroom reported that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is reportedly considering dissolving the House of Representatives next month to call a general election within the 60-day legal timeframe, possibly in February 2026. Analysts suggest the move may aim to preempt a censure debate likely to be initiated by opposition parties, including Pheu Thai and Abhisit’s camp.

Key Takeaways

• Prawit Wongsuwan confirmed as Palang Pracharath’s top candidate for prime minister.

• Party reshuffles include Trinuch Thienthong as secretary-general and Paibul Nititawan as deputy leader.

• Election likely in February 2026, potentially timed to preempt a censure debate.

  • Didn't a " youthful " person actually win the last election , but the dinosaurs had him removed ?

  • Run for election?  Prawit can barely walk, let alone stay awake during important meetings.

Prawit, Anutin, Prayuth, and  Thaksin are relics of an ancient age in Thailand where men were not appointed based on any level of merit, competemce, intelligence, creativity, vision or leadership abilities, but rather their connections, their power, and their fortunes. These are very sad, very pathetic men who have no business even considering leading this nation.

One of these days the youth will lead this nation and it will finally be able to start moving in a forward direction.

Out with a very toxic dinosaurs and in with the progressive youth!

He should be pt out to pasture...

He may have a heart attack before becoming Prime Minister, he looks so sick.

Good on him if he can climb the steps to where he has to sit.

In that regard, he is nearly a twin brother to the failed leader in the US.

Unfortunately no one has the nuts to tell him no.

Dear God. Hang your watches up and shuffle off.

Is that guy alive still ?

This is the caliber of Thai politics!!

Prawit political platform: There is still plenty to corrupt in Thailand, let's get at it!

😅🤣😂

I thought a PM should be elected from elected MP's of the majority party in Parliament.

Or would this be another coalition offer to secure yet more years of dinosaur politics
