Airstrikes kill seven civilians in Mandalay region

Myanmar’s military carried out fresh air raids on villages in Singu Township, Mandalay Region, on 27 November, killing seven civilians, including displaced persons sheltering from earlier fighting.

According to the local People’s Defence Force (PDF), fighter jets from Meiktila Air Base struck Waryonkone Village monastery in the morning, killing five and injuring ten. Witnesses said displaced families had gathered there for Sabbath prayers when the bombs hit. Later in the day, further strikes on Pinlelgyi, Shaukpinyoe and Pyinpin Villages killed two more internally displaced people and wounded two others.

The attacks form part of a wider offensive aimed at retaking military bases lost in neighbouring Madaya Township. Thousands of residents have fled into Singu, where the PDF says the junta is deliberately targeting shelters for displaced people. Local officials also reported the use of suicide drones against civilian areas.

This latest assault follows a grim pattern. On 12 November, the air force bombed a school in Marle Village that was housing displaced families, killing five and injuring at least five more. Similar strikes have been reported across Sagaing and Kachin regions over the past year, often hitting schools, monasteries and clinics where civilians seek refuge. Rights groups say such attacks highlight the military’s reliance on air power to punish communities seen as sympathetic to resistance forces.

The PDF has urged residents to heed air raid warnings and take cover in bunkers, but many shelters remain overcrowded and poorly equipped. With the military controlling less than half the country’s territory, airstrikes have become a blunt instrument of intimidation, spreading fear among civilians already uprooted by conflict.

For Myanmar’s displaced, the raids underscore a bleak reality: even places of worship and learning are no longer safe. As the junta presses its campaign, the toll on ordinary families continues to mount, with little prospect of respite.
