Thailand's flood prevention efforts in the south are getting a technological boost. The Cabinet, working closely with the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), plans to employ satellite data to tackle recurrent flooding in Hat Yai. This move aims to enhance flood control and make Southern Thailand more resilient to water-related disasters.

On December 4, 2025, GISTDA attended the Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Committee’s meeting at Government House. The main agenda was using satellite imagery to pinpoint risk zones and devise strategies to curb future flood damages. The committee laid out measures spanning five crucial areas: flood warnings and evacuation centres, infrastructure preparedness, public health readiness, disaster response guides, and training manuals for flood response teams.

Learning from global leaders in flood prevention, the meeting aimed to refine the methods used to manage and mitigate floods. GISTDA’s role involves crafting precise elevation and spatial data from satellite sources. This data will serve as a "navigation map," providing detailed insights into Hat Yai’s terrain and assisting with a site visit scheduled for December 6, 2025, in Songkhla Province.

This satellite data will identify the flow of water, low-lying zones, and barriers, crucial for mapping a robust flood defence strategy. The initiative represents a part of Thailand's ongoing efforts to establish a comprehensive flood protection system, positioning GISTDA as a pivotal player in national safety planning.

Experts believe that GISTDA’s data-centric approach will significantly improve flood management capabilities. With highly accurate information at hand, authorities can make informed decisions to enhance public safety and infrastructure resilience against flooding.

Thailand's approach will undergo a transformation as it integrates satellite technology into flood prevention strategies. As the visit to Hat Yai approaches, stakeholders anticipate concrete plans that leverage GISTDA’s data to safeguard vulnerable regions, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

GISTDA and the Cabinet are using satellite data for flood management.
The focus is on enhancing strategies for Southern Thailand, especially Hat Yai.
Detailed satellite imagery will be used on a site visit to Songkhla Province.

Satellite data.... drainage is what's required
