The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is set to adopt Japan's Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model, launching its inaugural commercial land project early next year in Bangkok's Praram 9 area. This decision follows a visit by MRTA's deputy governor, Pattanaphong Phongsupatsamit, to Japan's Urban Renaissance Agency (UR), which has successfully implemented TOD projects like the Shinagawa Project. By using this model, MRTA aims to integrate mixed-use planning with rail-centered urban development, featuring residential, commercial, and mobility hubs.

In Japan, the Shinagawa Project, valued at 25 billion baht and designed by architect Kengo Kuma, connects Shinagawa and Takanawa Gateway stations through high-speed Shinkansen services and various transport modes, offering seamless transit options. The implementation of advanced technologies like autonomous robots and AI-guided systems highlights UR's commitment to modern urban infrastructure. Moritani Koichiro, UR's associate vice president, emphasized that Thailand's TOD potential hinges on encouraging public transport use aligned with eco-friendly goals.

The MRTA's planned development in the Huai Khwang–Rama IX corridor aims to emphasize health-related services, capitalizing on the expected sector growth. The strategic location provides connectivity through the Blue and future Orange Lines, linking healthcare and commercial facilities. The project is expected to be proposed to the MRTA board this month, with cabinet approval sought thereafter, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • MRTA's project in Bangkok will implement Japan's successful TOD model.
  • The initiative aims to boost public transport use, aligned with green goals.
  • The MRTA's health-focused project proposal seeks cabinet approval soon.
