Fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces along the border has overshadowed the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, set to be hosted by Thailand from December 9 to 20. Despite border clashes starting over the weekend, which each country blames on the other, Cambodia proceeded with its flag-raising ceremony at Bangkok’s Indoor Stadium Huamark, confirming its participation.

Thana Chaiprasit, head of the Thai delegation, confirmed that about 170 Cambodian athletes have arrived. The athletes and officials are staying in the same hotel, ensuring extra precautions for their security. Thana advised them to remain indoors and urged Thai spectators to maintain courtesy, emphasising peaceful support rather than hostility.

Security measures have been intensified, as stated by the Sports Authority of Thailand governor, Kongsak Yodmanee. Security personnel have significantly increased their presence, with both uniformed and plainclothes officers on duty. Additionally, X-ray machines will be used at entry points and hotels to ensure the safety of the Cambodian team.

This is Thailand’s first time hosting the Games in 18 years, involving 11 Southeast Asian nations. However, the event has faced backlash regarding planning delays due to a government transition.

The Tourism and Sports Minister, Attakorn Sirilatthayakon, highlighted the challenges faced in organising the opening ceremony but promised it would be commendable. The ceremony, themed “WE ARE ONE,” focuses on unity and recalls the first SEAP Games in Thailand 66 years ago. Performances featuring Thai and international talent aim to showcase cultural richness.

Thai K-pop star BamBam will appear, with a unique torch-lighting ceremony set to be a highlight. The ceremony is designed to be environmentally friendly, and the organisers are keen to ensure it doesn’t contribute to local pollution. Attakorn remarked that the Games aim to offer exciting activities for all attendees. reported Khaosod.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thai-Cambodian border tensions impact the SEA Games opening.
  • Enhanced security measures protect the Cambodian delegation.
  • The ceremony emphasises unity with an environmentally conscious approach.

If they join together all participants they still might not be able to put together a 1 full football team. 😄
