The Royal Thai Army has appointed the mother of a conscript who was killed during clashes along the Thai–Cambodian border to a civil service post, granting her employment in recognition of her son’s sacrifice. The appointment took effect from 9 December and is intended to provide immediate support and long-term security for the bereaved family. The move follows army regulations that allow relatives of fallen personnel to enter government service as a form of compensation and honour.

The decision relates to the death of Private Yanapat Kotsakha, a conscript assigned to the 2nd Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment. He was killed while performing operational duties to protect national sovereignty, maintain public order and ensure the safety of Thai citizens. His death occurred during border confrontations between Thailand and Cambodia in the period from 24 to 28 July.

Under established Royal Thai Army regulations, the families of those who die in the line of duty are entitled to welfare measures, including the possibility of employment for a close relative. This policy aims to ease financial hardship, provide career stability and formally recognise the service and loyalty of fallen soldiers. The army has stated that such appointments also serve to preserve the honour and legacy of those who died defending the country.

As part of this process, the army approved the appointment of Ms Sopha Kotsakha, the soldier’s mother, to enter service in place of her son. She has been employed by the 21st Military Circle as a civilian defence official below commissioned rank. Her position is clerical typist within the logistics unit of the 21st Military Circle, with an employment grade equivalent to sergeant.

Ms Sopha formally reported for duty at the headquarters of the 21st Military Circle on 9 December. She was received by Major General Phongkrit Ruchiyotthin, Commander of the 21st Military Circle, who acknowledged her appointment in accordance with army procedures. The army has confirmed that she has now begun her official duties.

Komchadluek reported that the Royal Thai Army said the appointment reflects its commitment to caring for personnel and their families, particularly those affected by combat-related deaths. Officials described the policy as an important mechanism to ensure that families of fallen soldiers can continue their lives with stability. The army reiterated that the honour of those who die in service will be preserved and recognised over the long term.

Doesn't bring her son back but a reasonable thing to do in recognision of his unfortunate death.

Very good but will she get any training for her new job in the civil service ?
