Imagine if trump offered free healthcare, education, and good pensions to Greenlanders? They might agree.

I wonder what the southern states of America would say?

The Danes sold the Virgin Islands to America in 1917, formerly called the Danish West Indies.

Denmark got shrunken in the 1860's when the Prussians nicked half their territory, later becoming part of modern Germany. I believe that about this time they offered Greenland to the US but they declined. In fact the whole story of the German unification process involved so many land deals, it makes Trump look like an amateur.

Florida was acquired as debt relief to Spain. Louisiana was bought from France, Alaska from the Russians.

Throughout history, land and countries have been bought sold and traded between many Crowns and governments. It's just that in our living memory it has never been done, so it sounds kinda strange. The closest thing to a land deal that we all understand is the relinquishment of Hong Kong back to China - an example of how not to negotiate a lease agreement and Maggie's biggest mistake.

The <removed> effect tends to decide on which side of the debate you favour. Historically. Greenland acquisition has come up for discussion at least three times. I wonder how crazy an idea it would be if Barry Obama had suggested it. :coffee1:

Poor Greenland, there goes the neighberhood. It won't happen, not even Americans want to be American and Trump won't last forever, probably not even the next 12 months, his legacy is so toxic that his dreams won't be revisited.

Not a bad idea. Engage brain and think about it.

The HK example is quite strange as the only lease in existence relating to this was the New Territories 99 year lease which covered land to the north of Boundary Street in 1898.  The Kowloon Peninsula was permanently ceded to Britain in 1860 under the Convention of Peking after the 2nd Opium War.  Hong Kong Island was ceded in perpetuity in the Treaty of Nanking of 1842 where the Qing Government agreed for it to become a Crown Colony; this was after the British Victory in the First Opium War.

None of the three 'entities' could survive the loss of one other and, as the land owner decided not to renew the lease, there was little Maggie could do.

This was not Thatcher's finest hour. She allowed herself to be ill-advised by a pro-CPC member of the Foreign Office.

If Greenland should not be Danish or independent, it should be Norwegian.

Both Iceland and Greenland was norwegian centuries ago, before an "unfortuneate marriage" resulted in a union between the 2 countries, lasting 400 years.

Sk donnie diaper can f... off, and consentrate on solving diversions in "beacon of liberty" !!!

As ever - follow the money.

The US is in financial trouble, the national debt is now colossal, domestic taxation cannot service the debt and provide the level of spending that they want and need. Tariffs are a busted flush. Cutting back, particularly on defence is politically unthinkable. Infrastructure is in trouble and more and more money is needed.

Greenland has huge potential mineral wealth - new technologies will both increase demand for those resources, and make it more practical to exploit them. Canada also has these resources, along with timber, energy and water - there is a growing problem of shortage of water for agriculture in the U.S. States adjacent to western Canada. Venezuela has massive oil and gas resources. All three countries are nearby. All three countries are unable to compete, in conventional military terms with the USA.

These resources, control and exploitation of them, will go a long way towards financing and paying down that debt; and of course make those enterprises exploiting them very profitable. Taking and exploiting those resources is a medium term fix to the financial state that the US finds itself in.

Now I doubt that Trump himself thought that up - but the potential for personal aggrandisement - the President who created the new American Empire - would be enough to get him onside. The people, institutions and corporations who influence/advise are likely behind it. Traditional alliances, Europe and NATO are of no matter and can be discarded.

Welcome to the brave new world of the American Western Hemisphere, a transactional empire like no other, backed by a massive military; follow the money!

Scary but sort of makes sense

Have you noticed what's waiting in the wings for that eventuality? And they're not idiots either - at least not in the classical sense.

The mid-term elections could save America from the toxic idiots but it's going to slowly collapse anyway, the only question is will they collapse with dignity or with ignominy. America is laughed at and hated world wide now, a true statesman is needed but they are rarity in the world and even rarer in America. Obama was the nearest they got to and he has improved with age.

Trump has shown he is a Russian asset and a traitor.

Never believe a word this MFer spouts. National protection? Of course he doesn’t elaborate what that means. The US already has a military installation in Greenland, Putiffik space base. It shouldn’t be forgotten that he frequently attacks NATO and has shown that he sides with Putin, rather than the allies that comprise it,  who wants to see it diminished or removed completely. The real reason is the rare earth elements that have been largely been untapped and holding some of the world’s largest reserves and he knows to own those sites is to have power. That’s what he’s really focused on, and of course wants to personally profit from. He doesn’t give a flying phuk about Greenland or its people, it’s all about his greed. This could escalate but I sincerely hope both Greenland and Denmark never capitulate to the despicable PoS.

Trump doing Greenland a favor they can be a new state like Hawaii

Yep, Greenland should accede to the US. Then they can give up free universal healthcare, free higher education, 5 weeks paid leave per year, parental leave,  subsidised child care,  subsidised in-home care for the elderly and all the other benefits that civilised countries have. They also ban handguns and automatic weapons so tend to avoid mass shootings. Sounds like the type of favour that Trump specialises in.

But on the plus side, they will be great again, whatever that means...

The USA "has to have" a lot of things; most of which it will never get.

Having Donald Trump should be enough for the USA, do not be too greedy.

USA need smarter people, and less greedy

Trump must resign for national protection, and the sooner he does it the better. He will put America and the world out of danger with this one selfless act of contrition.

I think if you ask most Greenlanders they would tell you that they prefer two weeks a year of vacation over five, and that they prefer $2000 a month per couple for health insurance over free healthcare. Free child care might tip them over the edge, though.

He is a traitor. Plus it is likely he is the least courageous man to ever occupy the office of U.S president, and he is certainly the least charitable, perhaps in the history of mankind, relative to his net worth.

He is reptilian. Barely human. Morally depraved. Completely lost in space and semi senile. And of course he doesn't have enough self-awareness to realize how completely ridiculous he is. If he did he would be deeply embarrassed. Most Americans are.

They'd say they already get that as part of Denmark - which, by the way - has one of the most generous social services of any country in Europe.
