Alex Eala, currently ranked world no. 53 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), clinched her first gold medal in the women's singles tennis event at the Southeast Asian Games 2025. The final, held in Bangkok on Thursday, December 18, saw Eala face Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew, ranked world no. 240. Eala secured victory with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-2, earning her first gold and third medal overall in SEA Games history.

Previously, Eala won two bronze medals in the mixed doubles and women’s singles events at the 2021 SEA Games. Her achievement marks her as the third Filipina to win a gold in the singles event at the SEA Games in 26 years, following Pia Tamayo and Maricris Fernandez in 1999. The victory adds to her growing legacy and highlights her significant progress in the sport.

Before this triumph, Eala and her partner, Francis Casey Alcantara, were defeated in the semifinals of the mixed doubles tournament at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games. They faced Thai duo Patcharin Cheapchandej and Pawit Sornlaksup, losing with a score of 7–5, 5–7, 7–10, and settled for a bronze medal. Despite the disappointment, Eala expressed satisfaction with giving their all in the competition.

Looking forward, Eala’s gold medal victory is expected to boost her confidence and inspire young Filipino athletes. Experts believe her success could foster more interest and development in tennis across the Philippines. Eala is anticipated to continue her upward trajectory in upcoming international competitions, reported Balita.
