Russian ship seized by Finnish authorities

Featured Replies

A ship from Russia has been seized by Finnish authorities after it was thought to have damaged underwater cables.

The cargo vessel was sailing between Finland’s capital Helsinki and Tallinn in Estonia and has since been captured by police.

Finnish authorities said the 132-meter-long ship was called “Fitburg” and its anchor chain was at sea while it was moving. It’s suspected that subsea cables in the Baltics have been damaged.

Police said: "Finnish authorities have taken control of the vessel as part of a joint operation.”

The vessel sailed under the flag of St Vincent and Grenadines and had departed from St Petersburg in Russia. It was headed to Haifa in Israel, according to MarineTraffic data.

Telecoms group Elisa, which is based in the Finnish capital Helsinki, said it detected a fault in a cable early on Wednesday morning, The Guardian reported.
