Flooding hits southern provinces

Floods have hit the southern provinces of Phang Nga and Surat Thani, prompting some schools to close Tuesday, causing landslides blocking traffic on some roads.

A second round of flooding in Phang Nga worsened following heavy rainfall on Monday. About 1,400 households in four districts have been affected by the Phang Nga flooding, while three schools in Takuapha municipality closed Tuesday as a safety precaution as forest run-off from Pakong district flowed into Takuapha municipality and surrounding areas. Some areas are under two metres flood water.

Rescue officials assisted local residents in evacuation and moving their belongings to higher ground. Landslides have blocked many roads.

In Surat Thani, the situation is worrying as a flash flood from Khaosok National Park inundated the community area in Phanom district, damaging more than a dozen homes. The national park is now inaccessible.

Earlier, about 90 students from Phanom Suksa School who had camped in the national park were reported safe and left for home Tuesday morning.

The latest report said three more villages in low-lying areas have been flooded. The flooding disrupted electricity and telephone service, affecting about 200 households. A portion of the Thakuapha-Surat Thani road is impassable due to landslides blocking the route.

Surat Thani, Phangnga hit hard by floods

In Tambon Tham Nam Phud, flood levels were over two metres high after the latest heavy downpour yesterday.

Mudslides blocked traffic at several spots on both local and inter-provincial roads, including Pthetkasem road, which is the main route to the South.

Residents in seven out of eight districts of Phangnga were affected by flash floods.

The seven districts are Muang, Kapong, Khura Buri, Ko Yao, Takua Pa, Thai Muang, and Thap Put. Takua Thung is the only district not affected.

Phangnga Governor Winai Buapradit has declared the seven districts a disaster zone and sought emergency assistance from the Interior Ministry.

The governor said the flooding was the worst in 60 years. In Surat Thani, run-off from Khao Sok National Park yesterday flooded at least 500 households in six villages in Tambon Khlong Sok, Phanom district.

Floodwaters have damaged about 2,000 rai of farmland in the six villages.

Mudslides also cut off local roads linking Takua Pa district and Surat Thani.

Chaithat Bunphoophantanti, chief of Khao Sok National Park, said the mountain run-off from the national park was the worst in 80 years.

The floods near the national park have damaged two bridges and an asphalt road worth around two million baht.

Phang Nga Governor Winai Buapradit yesterday morning inspected and visited flood victims in many locations of Phang Nga province including the Tam Nampud in Muang district which faced one and a half metres of floods.
