A Russian man wanted for extorting over 1 million roubles from a CEO in Russia has been arrested in Koh Samui, Thailand. Sibgatullin Airat, 40, was located using biometric technology at a luxury hotel, where he was apprehended by immigration officials. His arrest follows a request by the Russian Embassy after Airat fled prosecution in his home country.

Authorities discovered Airat's whereabouts despite his frequent change of accommodations. He was staying with his girlfriend at a resort in Bo Phut when officers detained him by the pool. Following his arrest, Airat's stay permit was revoked, and an official investigation is underway.

The case dates back to extortion activities between November 2023 and November 2024, involving Airat and three other Russian nationals. They allegedly threatened a major automotive company’s CEO with releasing damaging information, resulting in a payment of over 1 million roubles. Russia's federal police issued arrest warrants, leading to coordination with Thai authorities upon locating Airat in Thailand.

Pol Lt Gen Phanumat Bunlaksana of the Immigration Bureau has emphasized increased vigilance against foreign criminals in Thailand. A nationwide crackdown has been ordered, encouraging the public to report suspicious foreign activities via established hotlines. This case highlights ongoing international cooperation in law enforcement.

Looking forward, authorities in Thailand are expected to continue collaborations with Russia to ensure a smooth extradition process. Airat's arrest signifies the effectiveness of biometric tracking in apprehending foreign fugitives, and the Immigration Bureau remains committed to enforcing laws against illegal activities, reported Bangkok Post.

It reads like he's been here for around 2 years. If so, yes, very effective biometric tracking. 🙂

So it was the Russian cops that got him, not Thai......coffee1
