Immigration police and cybercrime officers have arrested a Chinese national in Chiang Mai who is wanted by authorities in China for a large-scale financial crime causing losses of more than 7 billion baht. The suspect had been hiding in Hang Dong district and was detained on 9 January 2026 following a court-approved search. Authorities said the arrest will remove a high-value fugitive from Thailand and triggers immigration enforcement action.

The operation was carried out by Immigration Division 5 in cooperation with the Technology Crime Suppression Division. It followed intelligence that the suspect had entered Thailand and was residing in a private property in Hang Dong, Chiang Mai province. Officers obtained a search warrant from the Chiang Mai Kwaeng Court before moving in.

The suspect, identified as Mr Li, is a Chinese national and a person of interest under an arrest warrant issued by the People’s Republic of China. He is accused of illegally accepting public deposits, an offence that allegedly caused financial losses exceeding 7,000 million baht. Chinese authorities had also cancelled his passport prior to his arrest in Thailand.

Police said Mr Li had already been subject to the revocation of permission to stay in the Kingdom under the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979). During the search, officers located and identified him as the individual named in the Chinese warrant. He was informed of the revocation order and taken into custody without incident.

The arrest was conducted under the direction of Pol Maj Gen Sarawut Khon Yai, Commander of Immigration Division 5. The operational team was led by Pol Maj Wichai Kawichai and included officers from Chiang Mai Immigration and cybercrime investigators. Officials said the case reflects ongoing cooperation between Thai law enforcement and foreign authorities.

Following his arrest, Mr Li was transferred to Chiang Mai Immigration for further legal proceedings. Authorities did not disclose details of any immediate extradition request but confirmed that standard procedures would be followed. His immigration status and detention will be handled in accordance with Thai law.

Khoasod reported that the case highlights Thailand’s continued efforts to prevent the country from being used as a safe haven by foreign fugitives. Immigration police said investigations into related movements or associates, if any, would continue. Further action will depend on coordination with Chinese authorities and applicable legal frameworks.
