Thai authorities have arrested six Thai nationals and a Cambodian woman in Sa Kaeo province as they prepared to illegally cross the border to work for online gambling websites in Cambodia, police said on 9 January. The operation halted an attempted crossing through natural routes into Poipet, disrupting a suspected recruitment and smuggling network linked to illegal gambling operations.

The arrests followed an order from Pol Col Jaturaphat Singhasathit, Deputy Commander of Sa Kaeo Provincial Police, who directed investigators to act on intelligence about a staging house near the border. Pol Col Damrong Iampairoj, Chief of the Investigation Division of Sa Kaeo Provincial Police, led a joint force with the Burapha Task Force to surround and search a waiting point at house number 242, Moo 2, Phan Suek subdistrict, Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo.

Inside the house, officers found six Thai nationals with luggage sitting and waiting to cross the border. Initial questioning revealed they had been recruited to work as staff for online gambling websites operating from the “Hi-So” building in Poipet, Cambodia, and planned to cross illegally via natural border routes.

Investigators said the group had been contacted through Cambodian intermediaries, with the employer covering all travel costs at 8,000 baht per person. Further inquiries identified the alleged organiser as a 60-year-old Cambodian woman, named Ji Nan Si, and a 31-year-old Thai man, Lerphong Boonpheng, who was responsible for overseeing the waiting house.

When officers checked Ji Nan Si’s immigration status, she was unable to produce documents permitting her entry or stay in Thailand. A search of Lerphong Boonpheng’s mobile phone found him actively gambling online at the time of the raid, prompting additional action by police.

Ji Nan Si was charged with illegally entering and remaining in the Kingdom without permission. Lerphong Boonpheng was charged with jointly participating in illegal online gambling involving property without authorisation, as well as using a Category 1 narcotic, methamphetamine, in violation of the law.

All suspects, along with seized evidence, were taken to Khlong Nam Sai Police Station for formal investigation and legal proceedings. Police said the case forms part of broader efforts to curb cross-border crime, illegal gambling networks, and the trafficking of Thai workers into illicit operations abroad.

Daily News reported that authorities are continuing to expand the investigation to identify employers, recruiters, and financial backers behind the Poipet-based gambling websites. Further arrests may follow as evidence is analysed and coordination continues with military and border security agencies.
