Pheu Thai’s Yodchanan Wongsawat met with key figures from Thailand's gaming industry on January 12 in Bangkok. The meeting aimed to discuss strategies for enhancing the country's standing in the global digital economy. Industry leaders highlighted the sector's value of nearly 40 billion baht and stressed the need for modern legal frameworks to unlock its full potential.

Currently, Thailand's gaming industry is regulated under the outdated Film and Video Act BE 2551. The Thai Game Software Industry Association (TGA) called for the establishment of a Game Industry Act dedicated to supporting and modernizing the sector. Reforming these regulations is seen as crucial for enabling Thai gaming businesses to compete internationally.

Yodchanan emphasized the integration of gaming into Pheu Thai’s soft-power strategy. He suggested digital games should be part of broader technological ecosystems encompassing augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and IT, which are essential for developing artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies. He also proposed direct government investment in infrastructure and global IP licenses to support strategic growth.

Industry experts believe that the proposed reforms and investments could attract international investors and elevate Thailand as a regional gaming leader. As the Game Industry Act approaches finalization, Thailand aims to join other nations like Japan and South Korea in formalizing its digital gaming sector.

Looking ahead, continued collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders will be vital to implement these changes. Success in this endeavor could position Thailand as a gaming and technological hub in Southeast Asia, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai gaming industry seeks a dedicated Game Industry Act to modernize regulations.

  • Investment in digital infrastructure and skilled professionals is essential.

  • Proposed changes could enhance Thailand's position in the regional gaming market.
