A candidate for the People’s Party in Thailand, Ratchapong Soisuwan, was arrested on January 14 over alleged ties to an online gambling network and money laundering. The arrest took place at his home in Bangkok's Bueng Kum district. Ratchapong is running for MP in Tak province and was previously associated with the Move Forward Party.

The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) conducted the raid following investigations into the gambling site nakarin789.com, where funds were traced through accounts linked to Somphot Kaewprasit and Kanchana Namhong, who were also detained. Financial records showed money transfers from these accounts to Ratchapong's, leading to his arrest. Authorities are still pursuing at least two more suspects possibly involved in the network.

Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the People’s Party, addressed the arrest in a press conference, underscoring the party's zero-tolerance towards corruption and illicit activities. He stressed that the party would not protect members under investigation and highlighted the limitations of their internal vetting process. Natthaphong acknowledged previous complaints about Ratchapong but noted the lack of evidence for action at the time.

Ratchapong has yet to comment publicly as he remains under investigation. This case emerges shortly after another People’s Party member, Boonrit Raorungroj, faced similar charges involving drug trafficking and money laundering. Boonrit denied knowledge of the crimes, asserting his role was limited to being a company director; he was denied bail and remains in custody.

Authorities are continuing their investigations into the network, aiming to bring all involved to justice. The upcoming election in February adds urgency to clarify Ratchapong's involvement and its implications for the People’s Party, reported The Thaiger.
