Thailand's Suvarnabhumi International Airport has denied reports of an attempted hijacking after an outdated video was recirculated online, inciting public concern. The airport plans to pursue legal action against the Facebook page responsible for sharing the clip, ข่าวสดช่อง 8 (Channel 8 News), which falsely suggested a recent security breach. The video, claiming a drug-addicted man attempted to hijack a plane, quickly gained traction with over 19,000 reactions and 1,400 shares.

The video depicted a suspect on a motorcycle accessing the runway, apparently carrying a weapon, leading to a chaotic pursuit by airport security. The individual attempted to enter the passenger terminal but was thwarted by locked doors and was eventually apprehended. This incident triggered online criticism regarding the airport's security protocols, with many questioning the ease of access to restricted areas.

In response, Suvarnabhumi Airport clarified on its official Facebook page that the incident occurred in 2022 and that the situation was managed swiftly, with the suspect being prosecuted. No injuries were reported. They urged the page administrator to remove the misleading video to prevent further panic and referenced an official news report from the time of the incident.

The airport reaffirmed in a statement on January 27 that the events depicted were handled effectively and emphasized the falsehood of the recent repost. Legal avenues are being explored, as the dissemination of misleading information could breach Section 14 of the Computer Crime Act, which penalizes causing public panic with up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both.

Further investigation revealed that the Facebook page has a history of reposting outdated news from Thai television, misleading viewers by using a name associated with Channel 8 despite having no official link to the outlet, reported The Thaiger.
