A container truck in Samut Prakan pulled down over 70 power poles after getting caught in low-hanging communication cables during early hours on January 30. The resulting damage disrupted power in a 2-kilometre area, affecting Bang Pu Industrial Estate and causing widespread blackouts. Emergency repairs are underway, with full restoration efforts expected to last into the night.

The accident occurred at about 1am near the entrance to Bang Pu Industrial Estate. The truck, unfamiliar with the route, hooked onto cables leading to a chain reaction that collapsed power poles from Muang Samut Bang Pu Hospital to Soi Bang Pu Municipality 81. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the driver's alcohol test was negative.

The truck incident left poles obstructing bicycle lanes, bus stops, and residential access, though traffic on Sukhumvit Road remained open. Commuters faced difficulties, with damaged shelters unusable, prompting temporary power restoration by officials. Pasuthorn Rattanakham from MEA noted that both medium and low-voltage lines were affected by the downed 12-meter poles.

Emergency response included crews from MEA and nearby districts, working to install temporary pole lines. Comprehensive repairs are anticipated to last until at least 11pm, with financial losses expected to reach millions of baht. Bang Pu Municipality will assess damage to municipal property for compensation and legal processing.

In September, a similar incident in Chiang Mai involved a contestant from The Voice Thailand, leading to their death and local power disruptions. This underscores the ongoing challenges posed by infrastructure vulnerabilities, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A truck in Samut Prakan caused significant power outages by downing over 70 poles.

  • Emergency crews are focused on temporary fixes, with full repairs by late evening.

  • Municipalities are evaluating the financial impact, potentially reaching millions.
