Bangkok officials have announced an ambitious initiative to relocate 317.3 kilometers of electricity and communication cables underground by 2032. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) aim to improve the city’s infrastructure and urban aesthetics. To date, 97.3 km of cables have already been successfully relocated, with an additional 38.4 km expected by year-end, achieving a total of 135.7 km.

This project is part of broader efforts to align with national strategies for enhancing competitiveness and energy security. By moving cables underground, not only is Bangkok enhancing its skyline, but it also aims to bolster the overall quality of life for its residents. The improvements extend beyond cable relocation; on Wireless Road, for example, the MEA has been working on underground conduits and electrical systems while the BMA updates and strengthens pavements.

Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon expressed optimism about the progress due to better inter-agency coordination. Since its inception, the project has significantly cleaned up overhead areas and improved the cityscape. Moreover, it reflects a major infrastructure upgrade in support of urban mobility, with recent pavement improvements making pedestrian areas safer and more appealing.

Moving forward, the BMA is set to enhance 1,000 km of walkways by the next phase launching in June 2024. These upgrades feature culturally reflective designs and non-slip surfaces, underlining the city's goal to improve walkability. About 180 street food vendors have already been relocated to market spaces, ensuring smoother pedestrian access, which remains crucial as a significant portion of Bangkok's population relies on walking for daily transport, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Bangkok plans to underground 317.3 km of cables by 2032.

  • Improved pavements reflect cultural designs, enhancing safety.

I object strongly to this initiative. Those decorative cables are part of Thai heritage and tradition, just like traffic jams and smog! Particularly on Wireless Road. Without them, tourists could just be in any old city, couldn't they?

How many years have they been discussing this?
