Mayon Volcano generated its largest pyroclastic density current, with a 1,000-meter ash plume reported on February 9, according to Phivolcs. The event occurred at 10:35 a.m., sending the current 4 kilometers down the Mi-isi Gully slope. The volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating significant unrest and risk of eruption.

Activity at Mayon has been intensifying since the first week of January. On February 8, state seismologists recorded eight volcanic earthquakes, 469 rockfall events, and 43 pyroclastic density currents. Ashfall affected Barangays Camalig and Guinobatan in Albay, following a brownish ash plume emission.

The increased volcanic activity includes sulfur dioxide emissions of 1,799 tonnes per day, peaking at 6,569 tonnes on February 4. Lava effusion has persisted for 34 days, supported by a lava dome and low-level explosions.

Communities near Mayon are urged to avoid the 6-kilometer-radius danger zone. Hazards include rockfalls, landslides, ballistic fragments, and potential lahars during heavy rain.

In the upcoming weeks, continued monitoring and caution are advised. Phivolcs emphasizes preparedness as activity remains elevated, reported Philstar.

Key Takeaways

  • Mayon Volcano's activity has intensified, with largest pyroclastic event reported.

  • Communities are warned to remain clear of permanent danger zone due to ongoing hazards.

  • Lava effusion and sulfur dioxide emissions continue to be closely monitored.
