Better to just download it from the internet, for free.

Download the files, and use it on your device.

I actually used that for a couple of months, over a decade ago.

Not too bad.

However, the vocabulary is limited to a fairly small number of words.

Pamphlet introducing writing system does appear to be available as a free download, but that does not appear to be the case for the main textbook and workbook and listening tapes. I found vintage sets of this set at AU249 and 167 British Pounds for sale on line. 1500 baht price I offered still stands.

As long as I know it, and believe it, then this is all that matters to me.

Have you lost yours?

Going by your nonsensical posting record (and timings of said posts) I suspect you stay in your basement and are not allowed out.

Yes.

In fact, I just spent quite a few minutes googling trying to search for it, especially the audio files which should be available from some torrent on the web.

Strangely enough, I do not see them at the moment.

I have no urgent need to find them, and this is just a matter of curiosity at the moment.

I will continue searching, occasionally, when I have the time.

At the moment, The Pirate Bay is down. And will return sometime in the near future...when I will search that database...

Also, many years ago, or probably over 12, there was a comprehensive Thai Language Torrent which was still being seeded.

It was the Thai Learning Pack.

This torrent has many books and many audio files.

No doubt linguaphone is there too, but I forget.

I very much wish I HAD a basement.

If I had one, then it would be far easier to soundproof, and seal against the smoke this season.

I could stay in my basement and continue learning Thai.

No need to come out until end of June.

I thought you said you were a genius and was already fluent in the Thai language ?

Learn at least the basics of reading. You can then read signs, ads, etc. all around you. Makes a huge difference.

I keep giving the thumbs down to you and your mate's pathetic oneupmanship.

You do that, you manly man.

If you are trying to decide if learning the tone rules is indispensable for you consider this.

Imagine you don't know the pronunciation of an English word, let's say "entrepreneurial".

(I know, everyone can say it, it's just an example).

So you go to a dictionary website and see this:

image.png

What do you do?

Do you look at the phonetic spelling or click on the little speaker?

The Thai tone rules are very complex I think most people are better off clicking to hear an audio file and learn from that.

@MikeWill: the people who recommend learning to read are giving you the best advice. If you really want to learn to speak Thai well then reading makes it so much easier. However, start the same way Thais do, find a bookstore that sells the little booklets the Thai kiddies use, these start off with simple words and simple sentence structure..."the cat sat on the mat" sort of stuff that we English speakers began with. Anyway, learning to read basic Thai is really quite easy and once you learn to read you'll be learning new words everywhere you look.

just remember, those kiddie books are for kids that already know much Thai. The State Dept school of languages for their consular officers that must be able to speak a foreign language at all levels due to a need to interview for visas etc ...when I left that class after one year I could read write and speak to just about any Thai on any subject. We began speaking words and phrases 6 weeks or so before tackling the script and reading. Of course we were doing that 5-7 hours daily for that year and were getting paid for it too. After another 10-11 languages, returned toThailand and lost a lot of vocabulary BUT, i can still read the language just don't always know exactly what it means. i can carry a conversation again after getting married to a Thai lady that doesn't speak English very well. To ensure daughter got the best of both worlds, I speak English with her and her mother speaks Thai with her and she learned Chinese in school for 5 years and at the same time taught herself to speak, read, write and teach in Korean while in HS. She is studying Japanese on her own at this time while an exchange student in Seoul.

This book combines fundamental vocabulary, elementary grammar, and, ABOVE ALL, it starts at the beginning with learning Thai script.

Then, begin the Thai for Intermediate learners, from the same author, Becker.

If you do not start this way, then you will, Shirley, fail.

Or, if you don't fail, then you will lose focus.

It is only through the learning of Thai script that one can maintain motivation and focus.

ANKI is indispensable for memorizing all things, including Thai vocab, Science terminology, and academic vocabulary.

Anki is Free, as in Free Beer, too.

Listen to ALL Becker's audio files, as well.

These are very well done.

I strongly advise against learning Thai from your GF, as some insist upon doing.

I find having a GF around to be nothing but a distraction and a hinderance to the learning endeavor.

Good Luck.

Thai is easy.

But, Chinese language learning is easier.

Trust Me.

CRUCIALLY: It is most important to STOP TALKING ABOUT learning Thai, and actually DO IT, instead. Talking about learning Thai is what most people do, of course.

Here is a list of the audio files, and the PDF files for Thai language learning resources contained in the torrent I listed previously.

This torrent has been floating around for a long time, over 10 years, and is still active.

30 minutes is all that is required to download the full 8GB of data.

Now, Folks, you have ZERO excuses not to learn Thai.

When you say you are serious about learning Thai...sorry but....

I must smile a bit.

Most of you do not have the dedication, because...otherwise....

You would have begun learning Thai within a couple of weeks of your arrival in Thailand.

But that's OK>

I have nothing against the dreamers among us.

I'm not sure I agree with all those stating you must start with reading Thai script first.

I would suggest learning and using the romanisation of Thai to English (or other language one uses) is fine at the beginner phase. Once you've been learning for a while and start understanding vocabulary and grammar (Thai grammar isn't so difficult) THEN I reckon one should start to understand Thai script and have the basics of reading Thai.

If you do not learn to read thai, you will forever be pronouncing words and places wrongly: Krabi, Kanchanaburi, Pattaya, etc, are examples of place names farlangs read in an English way and not in a Thai way due to their ignorance of Thai script.

What you say is correct, but also contradictory. You are suggesting it's ok to learn incorrect pronunciation as a beginner, but as you progress, then learn Thai script to pronounce words correctly. Surely it's better to get it right first time and not unnecessarily learn bad habits first? Each to their own I guess, but I wish I had started with at least the Thai alphabet so I knew the difference between D ด DT ต or say B บ and BP ป

You misunderstood my post.

I was suggesting just get in to learning and speaking the Thai language at first, and at that stage it's OK to use romanisation of words - just get going - but at a later date it's beneficial to learn Thai script as it will help you truly understand the pronunciation of words.

I would not suggest to learn Thai script right at the beginning as a casual learner (like the OP sounds) as it will probably be too much. Just get in to learning vocabulary and simple conversations, preferably with a Thai a few times per week, and when you feel interested enough then learn Thai script.

And if you have a Thai teacher for conversational Thai lessons, they will doubt explain the difference between D ด DT ต or say B บ and BP ป and other points.

Has anyone tried using the FSI Thai Basic Course???

image.png

It's rather FUNNY because....

I once allowed a Thai uni student to listen to the audio files for this FSI course....and....

She fell down laughing....due to the antiquated pronunciation of the Thai readers.

So, if you want to study HILARIOUS-Thai, then this is the course for you....

Enjoy.

Hope you cannot stop laughing.

Consider this:

Whether it be Chinese or Thai....

Without proper voicing of tones, then you will be COMPLETELY unintelligible to everyone.

You will become: A laughingstock in the classroom, and while posting YT vids, as well.

So, the justification for learning proper voicing of tones is this:

YOU do NOT want your neighbors to ridicule you, behind your back.

And, learning proper tones will also help you avoid becoming an object of mockery during your Thai classes at Chula.
