Antisemitism in Real Life

Several threads on AN are devoted to antisemitism. The AN search function turns up 4,500 references to antisemitisms and derivative words like antisemitic and antisemite. Clearly it's a topic of no small interest.

But aside from theoretical discussions about what is or isn't antisemitism, Jews in every country live in the shadow of antisemitism. How does hatred of Jews manifest itself in real life, other than a few posts on AN?

In 2024, the Anti -Defamation League tabulated 9,354 antisemitic incidents across the U. S. This represents a 5% increase from the 8,873 incidents recorded in 2023, a 344% increase over the past five years and a 893% increase over the past 10 years. It is the highest number on record since ADL began tracking antisemitic incidents 46 years ago.

Let that sink in. Antisemitic incidents have increased nearly tenfold in a decade. The U.S. is home to 7.6 million Jews, about 40% of the world's Jewish population. The trend is similar in almost every country that has a Jewish population; antisemitic incidents have risen sharply.

Once again, the world's oldest hatred is showing its true colors. I'm going to list some of these incidents, based on press reports. It's testimony to the discrimination and mistreatment Jews face for no reason beyond irrational hatred.

Most of the incidents described below trace back to this article: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/jewish-life-in-europe-j-accuse-never-again-is-a-lie/ar-AA1ZB0QN?ocid=msedgntp&pc=W230&cvid=69c7920ff0324776a7c3f183446db35f&ei=14

The missing info from your post is that most of the incidents would be linked to Arabs and how they have been treated by Jews and Israelis over the past decades and beyond.

Even when at school we talked about the Palestine problem. The collective punishment meted out by the Zionists. Add to that the way that Arabs were portrayed in movies. Always the evil villains. Literally the demonisation of Arabs that continues until this day.

Marlon Brando, who actually supported the Zionists as a young man, had quite a different view as he grew up.

"“It's owned by Jews, and they should have a greater sensitivity about the issue of people who are suffering because they've been exploited."

He said Hollywood turned Arabs, Latinos, black people, Russian people, Europeans, Native Americans, into stereotypes. Everyone was a stereotype, except for Jewish characters, whom he felt weren’t. He saw this as unfair and saw studio heads, many of them Jewish, as “perpetuating stereotypes"

So it's a bit disingenuous to pretend that it has all come as quite the shock. Portray a Jewish stereotype in a movie and we would hear no end of it.

Then let's add the horrible reputation of the tourists from Israel all around the world.

Of course there's more...much more. But why bother? You are just going to scream victim anyway.

Who are those "The powers that be" and where, on what platforms can you not criticise Israel ?

Who has been silenced ?

You have to be kidding me to even state that, virtually any platform will ban you instantly as soon you do it. They did the same with talking about anything slightly negative, even its neutral, about Thailand, on reddit.com. Hence you never even find a post anymore.

Try searching for anything related to overstay, leaving thailand or being neutral critic or negative. You won't find anything.

Anyways if it comes to Jews, I'm pretty sure 99% of people agree with me. In fact, the only ones who don't, are jews themselves and some tiny wannabe support crew. This is no different when you speak factual truths about Thailand with wannabe oldies here, they will instantly stick their head in the mud and then activate their cognitive dissonance.

Why? Because of extreme fragile ego's and clearly feeling attacked personally on their poor choices in life, or what reality really is etc etc.

Islamaphobia is also on the rise and there have been attacks against muslims, both verbal and physical.

Is there a link between the two ?

Why is nobody hating on Buddhists or Hindus ? ( notwithstanding where Muslims and Hindus rub up against each other in the Indian subcontinent.)

Well now that you mention it if I had had access to Talmudic scripture and the teachings of the Essences and some of the Scribes, and the more esoteric aspects of the faith, and if I had had a rabbi the possessed one nanogram of wisdom and spirituality, I might have still been a practicing Jew.

Arabs of Judea and Samaria can use all the roads, including those in Area C, but for Jewish Israelis, entry into Area A constitutes a criminal offense.

I hope you are not trying to say they're is no discrimination in the West Bank, where Palestinians are tried in a military court and Israelis in civilian courts, including those in illegal settlements as Israeli law has been extended to them personally (even though they live outside Israel’s internationally recognized borders).

I'm sure you've seen the new law this week that will hang Muslims but not Jews in the same area. You'll probably deny this?

I could make a list as long (actually much longer) as this listing all of the IDF and "settler" attacks, assaults, and murders of Palestinian Arabs, global healthcare volunteers, and global aid workers in Gaza, The West Bank, and Southern Lebanon.

What relevance do the incidents you describe have to acts of antisemitism against Jews outside Israel and the Palestinian territories? What is the connection between the incidents I listed in the OP and the ones to which you allude?

There's been plenty of "hating on" involving Buddhists and Hindus. The Rohingya people of Burma don't have very warm feelings towards Buddhists. The United Nations has described the Rohingya as “the most persecuted minority in the world.”

https://www.unrefugees.org/news/rohingya-refugee-crisis-explained/

Even in Thailand's southernmost provinces, people "hate on" Buddhists as part of an active insurrection that has resulted in 10,000 attacks over the past two decades. About 6,000 people have died in the insurgency, according the Thai government, but other estimates put the death toll at 7,000 or more. https://www.nationthailand.com/news/policy/40046661

The 26-year civil war on Sri Lanka (1983-2009) between Buddhists and Hindus left an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 dead. Most people don't know it, but at one time the (Hindu) Tamil Tigers were the world's most active terrorist group.

You mentioned the conflict between Hindus and Muslims on the Indian subcontinent. That conflict has centuries of "hating on." The Mughal conquest of India has been called the biggest genocide in world history, with countless millions dead. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_Hindus

In more recent times, the partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan in 1947 resulted in over three million deaths due to rioting and communal violence. The violence continues today with a bloody insurgency in India's northeast region.

Buddhists and Hindus aren't immune from "hating on," even if the Jews capture most of the headlines. As Tom Lehrer sings, "Everybody hates the Jews."

Does that apply to other religions or only Jews? Are Buddhists in Japan or the U.S. responsible for the actions of the Thai military forces? Are all Muslims responsible for the actions of the Iranian armed forces?

But I will narrow the focus a bit. Theravada Buddhism is the state religion of Burma and Sri Lanka. Should Thai Buddhists be held responsible for the actions of the governments and military forces of those two countries?

This reply was fun to write!

Nothing the same. Thailand is not a country established only for Buddhists. There are not roads that Muslims can't use or discrimination against them.

Closely the same. Israel is not a country established only for Jews. It is the homeland of Jews, just as Thailand is the homeland of Thais. By current estimates, about 74% of Israel's population is Jewish, 21% Muslim and 5% Christians and others. That contrasts with about 94% of Thailand's population professing Thervada Buddhism; 5% Islam; and 1% Christians and others. The figures come from AI.

Neither Israel or Thailand has an official state religion. However, Buddhism enjoys a special status in Thailand, just as Judaism does in Israel. Section 67 of the Constitution of Thailand states: "The State should support and protect Buddhism and other religions. In supporting and protecting Buddhism, which is the religion observed by the majority of Thai people for a long period of time, the State should promote and support education and dissemination of dharmic principles of Theravada Buddhism for the development of mind and wisdom development, and shall have measures and mechanisms to prevent Buddhism from being undermined in any form." https://constitutionnet.org/sites/default/files/2017-05/CONSTITUTION+OF+THE+KINGDOM+OF+THAILAND+(B.E.+2560+(2017)).pdf

Israel doesn't have a written constitution, but its Basic Laws are the functional equivalent. The Basic Law: Israel as the Nation State of the Jewish People states, "The land of Israel is the historical homeland of the Jewish people, in which the State of Israel was established." It also says, "The State of Israel is the national home of the Jewish people, in which it fulfills its natural, cultural, religious and historical right to self-determination."

https://www.timesofisrael.com/final-text-of-jewish-nation-state-bill-set-to-become-law/

Both Thailand and Israel grant freedom of religion to its citizens and residents. As a former Thai gf used to say, "Same-same but different."

1 hour ago, JimCM said:

Surely you know about the Israel lobby in the USA and that many Jews donate to Israel, get Israeli citizenship and have family ties there. Totally flawed comparison.

There are no roads in Israel Muslims can't use. Muslims who are Israeli citizens or are citizens of a foreign country are free to use those roads. Access to the roads is based on citizenship, not religious affiliation. Restricting access by Palestinians is a security measure. It should be noted that access by Israeli citizens is restricted to some roads in the Palestinian territories. The text in English at the bottom of the sign spells it out.

Screenshot 2026-04-03 081737.jpg

During the Communist insurgency in Thailand in the 1970s and 1980s and during the ongoing insurgency in southern Thailand, the Thai military has been, shall we say, vigorous in imposing whatever security measures were needed, including access to roads.

Judaism, just as Theravada Buddhism, is a mixture of various inputs over the ages and takes different forms in different countries. Again, same-same but different. The religious practices of Reform Jews in the U.S. is very, very different from orthodox Jews in Israel, but both are part of Judaism. It's equivalent to the difference between Theravada Buddhism in Thailand and Zen, Nicheren and other sects in Japan.

There is a Thai lobby in the U.S. It keeps a very low-key profile and is nowhere as active or influential as the Israel lobby, but its there. Many countries all over the world have some form of lobbying in the U.S. Nothing sinister about that. Lobbying has been part of the U.S. political system since its earliest days and U.S. laws and policies affect foreign countries, especially regarding trade. Foreign governments as well as business and industry groups want to make their positions clear to U.S. lawmakers.

Thais who work abroad sent back money to their families in Thailand. Thai who live long periods in foreign countries often become naturalized citizens but maintain close ties with family in Thailand. Of the 145,000 Thai immigrants in the U.S. in 2023, about 67% were naturalized U.S. citizens. Another 50,000 children of Thai immigrants acquired U.S. citizenship through birth in the U.S.

Now, it's becoming ridiculous, comparing the Thai lobby to the Israeli lobby in the USA.

How many Theravada Buddhists are in the US Senate/Congress?

Islamaphobia is also on the rise and there have been attacks against muslims, both verbal and physical.

Is there a link between the two ?

Why is nobody hating on Buddhists or Hindus ? ( notwithstanding where Muslims and Hindus rub up against each other in the Indian subcontinent.)

Why are Buddhists not hated ?

Is it anything to do with behavior ?

Never heard of Asian hate?!?

Jew hating usually isn't about religion.

It's about hating Jewish PEOPLE. religious or not.

I experienced this myself one time walking with a Vietnamese guy in ironically a Chinese neighborhood in San Francisco.

Some white racist in a car started yelling slurs at him.

Asian and Jewish hate is on the rise. It's especially bad in the major cities.

Hmmm...if its about hating jewish people , religious or not , what is the reason for this ?

We are seeing an increasing number of places in Thailand refusing service to Israelies. Why ? Have Thais just started doing this as part of a trend. We are indeed seeing an alarming rise in anti semitism . Is this purely spontanious for no reason whatsoever ? Why do an increasing number of jews world wide feel less safe than say 5 years ago . What has changed ? Even on this forum compared to five years ago it is now a hot potato that was not here before .

If rape was on the increase you would clearly be looking for reasons to blame the behavior of those being raped.

This is much more common in the USA than Europe where the hatred is targeted at muslims much more than Indians or Orientals. I have read about Asian hate in the USA . Very nasty but really not yet a big thing elsewhere. I have just returned from the UK where we have many Thai and Filipino friends. Zero reports of hate attacks. On the contrary , they feel most welcome but I attribute this to the fact that they are totally integrated into society whilst still doing their own cultural things at home .

No I would be looking for reasons why rapists think they can get away with it as happens with grooming gangs in the UK where the police tried to keep the whole thing quiet.

But an interesting answer that says you believe that the rise in anti semitism has no cause. It is just a band wagon thing and peope just want to hate jews.

Even in Thailand's southernmost provinces, people "hate on" Buddhists as part of an active insurrection that has resulted in 10,000 attacks over the past two decades. About 6,000 people have died in the insurgency, according the Thai government, but other estimates put the death toll at 7,000 or more.

The violence in southern Thailand is real. But putting it on the same level as the West Bank isn’t just inaccurate.

Is there any

Military occupation and settlement expansion

Large-scale displacement and restrictions on movement

Frequent clashes involving heavily armed forces

Massive international diplomatic, legal, and humanitarian implications?

It's not Antisemitism, it because Israel are a rogue terrorist state. Social media has changed Israel for ever. They can't 'mow the lawn' randomly like they used to.

I know for a fact that you can know too that Jew hating has been a constant throughout history. It's expression rises and falls in cycles.

That is exact reason that the state of Israel was founded. That's different than saying that that attempt at a solution is turning out so great -- just giving the reason,

The state of Israel was founded by terrorist organisations, including Irgun, who bombed the King David hotel. The leader was to become the Prime minister. The reason The Queen of England never went there.

The British royal family and their long connection to Germany. Since 1714.

Persecution complex?

Of course there is a reason there is more hatred towards Israelis now. Netanyahu's vile Genocidal, Jewish supremacist actions are welcomed by Israeli society.

The only way in which Arabs are linked to the incidents is that Arabs are perpetrators in some cases, especially the most violent ones. I'm sure some deluded individuals imagine a causal link between the conflict in the Middle East and antisemitic incidents outside Israel, but that's merely the result of their confused thinking driven by hatred.

Antisemitism predates Israel and the modern Zionist movement by at least 2,000 years. Blaming the behavior of Jews for their mistreatment and discrimination at the hands of others has been the excuse of antisemites for millennia, not just centuries. The justifications for why Jews have been persecuted have changed over time. The treatment of Palestinians is the latest one. Old story, new twist.

At the heart of all antisemitism is the belief Jews are collectively responsible for the real or imaginary misdoings of other Jews. This notion goes back to Classical Antiquity, when Christians began blaming Jews for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, an event that had taken place several hundred years earlier. Unfortunately, the tendency to hold Jews as a scapegoat for society's ills combined with holding Jews collectively responsible set the stage for the ultimate horror, the deaths of six million Jews in the Holocaust.

The danger of "the Jews brought it on themselves" excuse is the implication that if Jews altered their behavior, antisemitism would disappear. The flaw in that argument is that Jews weren't and aren't guilty of the accusations. Jews didn't poison wells in the Middle Easts nor did Jews cause Germany to lose WWI. There is no Jewish conspiracy to dominate the world. How can Jews change behaviors or actions that don't exist?

Marlon Brando's comments on Jews came in an interview on the the Larry King Live TV show in 1996. Brando was 72 years old at the time. He later retracted and apologized for his antisemitic comments.

Brando Apologizes to Rabbis for Talk Show Remarks

Marlon Brando called his controversial televised remarks about Jews in Hollywood “unfortunate and incorrect,” and blamed them on “the pressures of appearing on a sound bite-oriented talk show,” according to two rabbis who met for three hours Friday with the 72-year-old actor.

At a news conference, Rabbis Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper said Brando opened the meeting by addressing them in Yiddish. They said that at one point the actor broke into tears.

So it's a bit disingenuous to pretend that it has all come as quite the shock. Portray a Jewish stereotype in a movie and we would hear no end of it.

Antisemitism doesn't come as a shock to me. As said, it's been around for more than 2,000 years. What does disappoint me is our failure to do away with hatred of Jews, that we haven't learned from the terrible consequences of antisemitism.

The mindset that allows some people to hate Jews is in the end a threat to democracy. The guys writing antisemitic comments on the Internet today will be the ones wearing brown shirts and swastika armbands if Nazism ever rises again.

Jews have often been portrayed in very negative light in cinema in the past, although all traditional ethnic stereotypes have softened in recent years. Below is Fagin from movie adaptations of Oliver Twist in 1948 and 1968. Alec Guiness played Fagin in 1948!

Fagindone.jpg

Below is Shylock from various stage and film productions of The Merchant of Venice. It is doubtful Shakespeare ever met or even saw a Jew in real life because there were none in the England at that time.

shylock4.jpg

On televeision and in films, ethnic stereotypes baed solely on physical appearance have largely disappeared. However, Jewish mothers are portrayed as either overprotective or overbearing, while spoiled Jewish American Princesses have become the stereotype for younger women. Jewish males are often shown as highly intelligent but socially inept nerds.

Then let's add the horrible reputation of the tourists from Israel all around the world.

Of course there's more...much more. But why bother? You are just going to scream victim anyway.

What does the reputation of tourists from Israel have to do with elderly worshippers at synagogues or children in Jewish schools? Are you seriously suggestion the misbehavior of some Israeli tourists contributes to harassment and attacks on Jews outside Israel? That makes as much sense as blaming an elderly member of the Church of England in New Zealand for the actions of British chavs or football hooligans while abroad. You keep going back to holding all Jews responsible for the actions of some Jews. Whether you realize it or not, that is the hallmark of antisemitism.

I never scream victim, but I do stand up to antisemites wherever I encounter them, on line or in real life, Never again is now.

Two more examples of antisemitism in everyday life:

Man pleads guilty to plotting Oct. 7 anniversary attack at Jewish center in NYC

Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 21, said he answered the group's call for Muslims to kill Jewish people by plotting to attack the Jewish center in October 2024.

A Pakistani man pleaded guilty to a terrorism charge Wednesday, saying it was a “morally reprehensible idea” to support the Islamic State group by plotting to use automatic weapons to kill Jewish people at a Brooklyn center.

He entered the plea in Manhattan federal court over 18 months after he was brought to the United States from Canada, where he was arrested on Sept. 4, 2024, in or near Ormstown, Canada, which is 12 miles from the U.S. border.

It's disturbing Jewish businesses are being targeted in Germany. That's how things started back in the 1930s.

Israeli restaurant in Munich targeted in anti-Semitic attack

Police said the windows of Eclipse Grillbar, a tapas bar serving meat, fish and hummus, were smashed by fireworks in the early hours of Friday morning.

Since its opening by a Jewish family nearly 20 years ago, the restaurant has been celebrated as a landmark for Israeli and Jewish culture in the Bavarian capital.
