Saddest Song and what does it mean to you.

Featured Replies

A change of thread away from the war and Trump. Mine has to be " The Winner Takes it All " Anyone that has gone through a <deleted>ty divorce knows most of the lines in this song. Even the first line " I Don't wanna talk about things we've gone through " Benny wrote this about his wife Agnetta although he said it was just a song he now admits he wrote it about her. It must of hurt them so much when she took the lead vocal on this. " I was in your Arms thinking I belonged there but i was a fool playing by the rules " who could write this in an hour.

Don't split hairs Callum i made a mistake bjorn and benny wrote it and they were divorced so i aplolgise.

Yes, Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog were divorced when "The Winner Takes It All" was recorded and released in 1980. While Björn has stated the lyrics are fictionalized, he admitted they were written during the emotional aftermath of their separation. The song, featuring Agnetha on lead vocals, was released just ten days after their divorce was legally finalized.

Ode to Billy Joe

Was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And mama hollered out the back door, "Y'all remember to wipe your feet"
And then she said, "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge
Today Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

And papa said to mama as he passed around the Black Eyed Peas
"Well, Billie Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits, please
There's five more acres in the lower forty I got to plough"
And mama said it was shame about Billie Joe, anyhow
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billie Joe McAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

Brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show
And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
I'll have another piece of apple pie, you know it don't seem right
I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge
And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And mama said to me, "Child, what's happened to your appetite?
I've been cookin' all mornin', and you haven't touched a single bite"
That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today
Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way
He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge
And she and Billie Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge

A year has come 'n' gone since we heard the news 'bout Billie Joe
And brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo
There was a virus goin' 'round, papa caught it and he died last spring
And now mama doesn't seem to wanna do much of anything
And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

Songwriters: Bobbie Gentry. For non-commercial use only.

The theme song for the 1988 British series Stringer....you've always got the blues .

The song primarily focuses on that catchy, soulful hook accompanied by a harmonica.

This brings a lump in my throat with thoughts of a good pal of mine now sadly deceased who was killed in a road rage incident here a couple of years back.......RIP Neill

September Song by Kurt Weill . About the brevity of life. (I'm 83 and every day counts)

Autumn Leaves. (Les Feuilles Mortes) About the deep sadness of missing a loved one who has departed.

Sunny Afternoon, the Kinks, 1966. 'The taxman's taken all my dough.....'

And although I love this song, arrangement and writer, what WERE they throwing off the bridge. I have my suspicions,

Ernie was the fastest milkman in the west.

Ernie was only 54 he didn't wanna die

But when that stale pork pie hit him in the eye old Ernie bit the dust. 😥😢😭

Apart by The Cure is definitely one of the saddest songs I listen to. It appears to be about a deep, and incredibly meaningful love affair that has fallen apart and wasted away, and the lingering aftermath. Robert Smith is a master songwriter, his voice is completely unique, and it can be a devastating matchup to a beautifully written and very sad song.

It doesn't matter how many times I hear this song, it's absolutely timeless, and it's utterly devastating. And gorgeous in its level of somberness.

Another Classic love song about a guy trying to make his life better but stopped everytime he try's. Elton John has said listening to this song when he was suicidal made him think he can turn the corner and get his life back on Track.

Forever Autumn, Justin Hayward says it all really

Lou Reed's Berlin album has some of the bleakest songs I've ever heard. Beautiful tunes but oh, the words and atmosphere. I've suffered loss and a failed romance but I can't say I've plumbed these depths.

In the arms of the angel. Sarah MacLachlan.

While the song was about the death of a band member from a drug overdose, it also seems to resonate with any tragic loss.

The Sisters of Mercy - Leonard Cohen

Even turned my Thai girlfriend here onto his music, which she enjoyed. Such a loss, as was another favorite of mine, Neal Casal, who took his own life a few years back. Excellent artist with many albums and collaborations with many others. Rafferty is always one artist I'll have cd's from on a road trip.

This is another favorite from The Blue Jays (Justin Hayward and John Lodge of the Moody Blues).........................As the dawn is breaking on your future my child
Is there none of your love alive?
If every door you open closes on me
I don't know if I can survive
I don't know if I can survive

Long is the road that takes you from home
My baby, oh my darling
And sleepless are the hours
And lonely is the night
For the poor tormented soul
Who is searching for the light

This morning I opened my eyes
I knew from the silence that something was wrong
Turning, I realised
I wanted to cry when I knew I was alone

But where will you go
And who will be your guide
And which way will you turn
The waters are so wide?
'Cos I never told you
No, you'll never really know
I need you so.Now the sun is rising on your freedom my child Is there none of your love alive? Every door you open closes on me I don't know if I can survive Knowing part of your love was lies Long is the road that takes you from home My baby Oh, my darling Sleepless are the hours And lonely is the night The poor tormented soul Who is searching for the light The moment I opened my eyes I knew from the silence That something was wrong Turning I realized I wanted to cry When I knew I was alone But where will you go? and who will be your guide? And which way will you turn? The waters are so wide But I never told you Now you'll never really know I need you so..........https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGyL7KVWkeI

I like "Loan me a dime" by Boz Skaggs and "Hello Stranger" by Barbara Lewis.

Also "Almost hear you sigh" by The Rolling Stones.

Beatles "You've got to hide your love away".

So many though, if sit and think I'll never stop.

Most love songs are written from a loss or someone special. The Commodores Three times a lady. How many of us have danced to this with your special one when you've had a few. Another favourite of mine and 1 i picked this as my wife walked out of the Church after getting wed was this ?? let you guess the song. "

My life has been such a whirlwind since i saw you

Iv'e been running around in circles in my mind

and it always seems that i'm followin' you girl

Cos you take me places

that alone i'd never find.
