Don't go stagnant

One reason I decided this year not to retire to Pattaya particularly I didn't want to become and yes a new word .. stagnant .....stagnant

.and many posts here by expats particularly in Pattaya indicate they have become .... stagnant ...same ole ...same ole ...everyday that's their modus operandi where they drink at bars ...

In fact many of these expat retirees had ONCE lived busy lives but then thought retirement to Pattaya was going to be exciting and then it became.... stagnant their life ,so sad

As many of us have 15-20 years left of life we must keep moving doing things to live , to enjoy , challenges even unusual things to get the blood pumping

I'm not wasting days ,I am taking pictures, doing graphs and statistics, working and multi tasking ,mopping floors whilst getting my 10,000 steps in ..

Last month I walked at 3am from my Airbnb at Arcadia down towards those basketball courts with no pants on to challenge myself and do something which may be considered perhaps odd or challenging

All I did was wear a t shirt , socks and shoes and then I put my underwear and shorts inside my shoulder bag in case I needed them , and walked naked bottomless on the main road down past that Italian pasta place and towards that old hotel California towards those sports courts

Hardly anyone around and only baht buses going past , strange thing was I would stop to cross the road only wearing my t shirt ,socks and shoes and the baht buses would still try to stop to pick me up !

It was something I enjoyed trying to be free , would I do it again , perhaps not

Georgeena you are absolutely right to avoid becoming stagnant.

That is a real risk in your life.

One minute you are having a quiet drink in Pattaya, next minute you are sitting in a bar every day doing the same thing.

Very dangerous.

Much better to stay active.

Up early

Mopping floors

Tracking toothpaste

Counting “smile” dental clinics

Running graphs

Maintaining the diaries

Gathering more statistics

Spreading your good luck

Meeting new ladyboys

That is how you keep the mind sharp.

And the 3am field exercise was brilliant.

Walking down the main road with no pants on, just a t shirt, socks and shoes, shorts in the shoulder bag.

Perfection!

That is exactly the kind of activity that separates you from the stagnant crowd.

Most retirees sit by the pool and enjoy themselves by relaxing.

But you are out there conducting live field testing at 3am.

Pushing boundaries. Next level, that is.

Even the baht buses trying to pick you up says it all.

They recognized a man on a mission.

Honestly it is probably for the best you do not retire to Pattaya.

The place is clearly not ready for that level of output.

You would have the entire area analyzed within a week.

Better to stay where you are.

Keep working

Keep moving

Keep documenting

Stagnation avoided.

Research continues.

Can we perhaps hear more about the airy and free feeling between your legs?

Does this post make you happy? Hope so.

your flashing semi nude walk went unoticed in Pattaya. You will have to be more daring in your quest for attention.

Yep, be afraid of becoming stagnant.

Be very afraid.

I think you will find that most people lives lives of, in your words, 'same ole same ole.' From your description, that includes you with your set routine of mopping floors, maintaining your diaries, gathering statistics, etc. Having a regular routine, however, does not automatically mean they are living 'stagnant' lives. It simply means they have a set routine that suits them--which could include sky diving every Monday, mountain-climbing every Tuesday, snorkeling every Wednesday, etc. etc.

If one prefers a set routine, it's due to the individual, rather than the place the individual is residing at. If Pattaya didn't exist, they would simply be carrying out their preferred lifestyle somewhere else. And, of course, there are people who prefer a set routine everywhere, not just in Pattaya. I think you have more of a problem with what the people are choosing to do with their lives, rather than what they are doing being 'same ole same ole'.

Several Pattaya expats clubs around whose members have many and varied interests. Becoming stagnant is up to you.

Are you for real ? If if please try and get help - preferably from some sort of mental health charity that won't fleece you in the process, Thailand isn't a FAFO kind of place to test their limits.

This happens a lot, one minute the farang is enjoying himself drawing graphs and counting the number of ladyboys he sees/fancies !

Next minute he is walking around at 3am waving his wedding tackle at passengers of the songthaews.

Just a normal day in Pattaya, i would say you have already stagnated !!

I thought you were about to say....

Don't go stagnant into that good night.

If you had, then it would have been a far better headline for this topic.

The Pattaya/Jomtien area has so much more to offer which the average Joe expat never even get to see..

Rent a bike, and explore the place for yourself. It's a fact that thousands of retirees and expats love it here, and have found their paradise.

As long as they manage their mental health, economy and duties it can be a good place for many, and for many others not so much

You're right. And our ole Georgie has a valid point. Find your variation of things to do, and you won't stagnate. You'll last longer as a happy expat.

Self control can be a challenge in Pattaya, so it's definitely not for all.

As we've seen on news stories, Pattaya becomes a downward spiral of alcoholism for many.

Bangkok or Chiang Mai might be better places to base yourself than Pattaya.

More variety of things to do and lead a more normal life, easier to travel outside the country for some variety.

Why retire to anywhere in particular if you have the income, decent health and the freedom to move around?

I am about to 'break free' and intend to stay in Pattaya, but as soon as I tire of it I'll be off to pastures new.

Your wife seems so nice. Is she coming too. Not my business I suppose.

Well..........

If I can grow a pair I'm going to leave her......crazy I know.....I think a very large proportion of the heterosexual, male population would jump at the chance to be in my situation.....but I'm experiencing an "old age crisis.".....with a limited time left I feel I should be "out there".

40 years living here and still have not become "Stagnant " or

the other word a lot of expats use "Bored" ,but I have never

spent my time in sitting in bars ,but lately I have had to slow

down because of my age 81 ,

George if you don't retire soon ,you never will , and you will be

buried with your mop....

That is the point which has escaped the OP of this article, his 'meat and two veg' which he was trying to show off were not even noticed as they had shrunk into oblivion due to age, people just though he was wearing pink shorts . 😀

I thought the OP was a bit strange, now I know he is, but he is good for a laugh.

What do I do with time, I spend a lot of the day writing iPhone apps from start to finish which can take six months or a year for each and then put them on the Apple App Store where they sell themselves.

I do them in my own time whenever I want, there is no rush as I do them out of interest.

Cycling daily around the reservoir in Phuket, long walks, restaurants, out with my long term Thai partner, she is good fun, there are so many things to do.

One thing I do though is stay away from Pattaya and stay away from the boring blokes in the bars as they are the worst bores in the world.

I do like to go out late into the night though now and then when friends come over for holidays as that is good fun as they are all positive and out for a good night out.

It took me four hour to tire of Pattaya when I was last there in 2019, never again. 😀

I would not call the place a pasture, more like a pigsty.
