Pentagon Denies ‘Threatening Vatican’ In Explosive Clash

Pentagon Rejects ‘Take Our Side’ Claims

The Pentagon has flatly denied claims that U.S. officials threatened the Vatican during a tense January meeting, dismissing reports as “grossly false and distorted.”

The row centres on talks between Elbridge Colby and Cardinal Christophe Pierre at the Pentagon.

According to reports, Colby allegedly warned the U.S. military could “do whatever it wants” and suggested the Catholic Church should align itself with Washington.

The Pentagon insists no such threat was made, describing the meeting as “respectful” and “professional.”

‘Avignon Papacy’ Remark Sparks Outrage

The most explosive claim centres on an alleged reference to the Avignon Papacy — a period when French rulers exerted control over the papacy.

Critics say invoking it implied a veiled threat.

US officials, however, say the entire account has been exaggerated, with both sides discussing policy, morality, and global security issues in what they describe as a routine diplomatic exchange.

Vatican Envoy Pushes Back

The dispute took a sharp turn when the Vatican’s own envoy contradicted the reports.

US ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Burch, said Cardinal Pierre himself called the story “fabricated” and described the meeting as “frank, but very cordial.”

That directly undercuts claims of intimidation — and suggests the row may be driven more by media interpretation than reality.

Tensions Rooted In War Dispute

The meeting did not happen in a vacuum.

Pope Leo XIV has repeatedly warned against the growing use of military force, criticizing what he calls “diplomacy based on force.”

Those remarks were widely seen as a swipe at the Trump administration’s handling of the Iran war.

US officials, for their part, argue their actions have made the world “safer” and insist relations with the Vatican remain strong.

A Relationship Under Strain

Despite the denials, the episode highlights a deeper rift.

Reports of the meeting surfaced just as tensions between Washington and the Vatican have intensified — particularly over war, morality, and the limits of military power.

Smoke Without Fire — Or Something More?

Both sides now insist no threats were made.

But the fact such claims gained traction at all points to a widening divide between political power and moral authority.

Even if the confrontation was exaggerated, the underlying conflict is very real — and it isn’t going away.
