Is retirement in Thailand a ticking time bomb?

Featured Replies

Your 'retirement' visa in Thailand is just a 'non-immigrant' visa. Even the name tells you what it is.

My annual retirement ER visa in Cambodia could be anulled by a change in the visa rules.

Actually, almost all south-east Asia countries offer zero security of residency for foreigners, except for The Philippines SRRV program, which offers lifelong residency from the start. Last year I almost moved to the PI on this program, because the bank deposit requirements is only $1,500 for scientists (I was already accepted by the retirement authority and had paid my deposit)

But somehow - for me anyway - the thought of living in the PI, with PI food, PI crime and PI women lost its appeal......

It's called life people. Live with your choices.

Pros & cons to every location, and that's all TH is, a location. Anywhere, you know the rules, and only invest what you can lose.

People are the same everywhere. Locations change, even if you are a resident, citizen. USA as an example, California was the place to be, now people are leaving, housing, taxes, COL, things change, locally, state/provinces wise, countries.

Thai laws & Imm policies are protectionism for TH, as it should be, and as many wish their home country was.

Living isn't rocket science, research, learn and yea ....

LIVE WITH YOUR CHOICES

A few of y'all need to learn how to relax, take a stress break, stop thinking so much. Been here how long, and still in 'doom & gloom' mode. Get off YT, or watching cooking channels or shorts with animals.

FFS ... Smile once in a while. You're living in a tropical paradise, learn how to enjoy it again ... like you just got off the boat.

Sounds cumbersome, why not use a shipping container ?

If your stuff really worth 7000 dollars?

Why would i make excuses? It's how it is. Moving isn't easy, especially with a child and a house full of necessary things. This isn't across Thailand but around the world. Another house has to be picked out, and I've been shopping, looking for one in the area I want.If I was there it would be a lot easier, as picking out a house has to be done while you're there, unless you send your family to each one you think might be right, and they have a family and work daily. If you have nothing and no children, it's quite easy to pack a few bags and leave. When I find one that suits our needs, talk to a realtor about everything, then I can send my daughter when she's free.

My fishing tackle alone is more. The CD's, even burned, would be 500,000 USD give or take, the movies 10,000-15,000 used. Everything else more money, but necessary, as all I'll get in a rent to own house is furniture I can replace one at a time.

Everyone thinks their <deleted> is valuable. Have you ever been to an estate sale?

Yes, it actually is, the size of a tractor trailer.

It's valuable to you personally. I've collected these things for decades. Impossible to replace all of it even if I wanted to, as much is either hard to find or would be time consuming to replace.Sentimental value along with actual.

This is a helpful clarification. As I understand it, Thailand does not issue a standalone “retirement visa”; rather, it operates within the non-immigrant visa framework, with extensions based on retirement, marriage, and a few more.

I'm finding it hard to understand how some CDs are worth more than half a million dollars.....

But regardless of what value you place on them, they are virtually worthless to your heirs. Why collect so much? You can't take them with you when you die.

I sold a box of cds for $30, 60 cents each. 2nd hand stuff is mostly worthless now.

Old records are worth $5 to hundreds each. Depends how rare. CDs are only worth 10c to $1.

Nothing new but good message oft repeated about not putting all your eggs in a Thai lady basket and about the future problems with funding healthcare.

How old are you? And how long will it take to watch all your movies and $500,000

worth of CDs?

You probably never listen to most ever again. Just pick your top 50 and sell the rest in bulk. You will be lucky to even get 10c each in Thailand. Youtube and Netflix has made your old cds and dvds mostly worthless.

Burning one CD costs from $5 -$10 USD, including the media. It isn't all about the money but the ability to choose from any album, songs, that you want to listen to, and having a collection, which is why anyone collects anything. To anyone else who just looks to Bluetooth this means nothing. To someone who really loves CD's, it means more. Some still buy Vinyl for this reason.

What is your most valuable CD

It's worth is to the person owning it, along with CD's which are out of print and worth a lot more.

Not sure, as I really haven't looked that up. I did sell 11,000 cassettes before i moved here, which was a mistake on my part. I do know one CD I have, April Wine- Back to the mansion, is worth about $70, as I searched for it awhile back, seeing it was out of print.I'm sure I have others that are also out of print which might be worth more, but that means nothing to me anyway.

69, and I listen daily and watch, and have been since I started I collecting them. It's mainly about having them available when I want to listen or watch. Music and movies are a passion.

The only ways a person learns after high school is reading, listening to teachers or watching videos. With all the bias out there, that's why it's best to use as much material as you can before you make a judgement about anything. Videos are made many times by professionals in any subject, and are easier than reading, although abridged.

When you place a thumbs down, explain why you disagree, or else it's just trolling from the usual weirdos. Adult forum remember?

CDs sell for $2 or $3 now in record stores. They buy them in boxes for less than a dollar. Often takes a year to sell.

You're living in the past.

Did you miss the part where I said it was a collection I can go to when I want to listen to a particular album? Nothing to do with how much they cost.

You won't live long enough to listen to many of them. Then when you die they will be dumped at the tip.

I've already listened to those in the cabinets. The rest I'll listen to along the way. When I pass, they'll go to my family . Why are you bothering to try and understand how I live my life? You might have little to nothing and be a wanderer, but I'm a homebody that likes things, much like the billions of others alive.

Good post Jingthing. However, this is nothing new, it is a fact but shines somewhat a little more clearly through the politics that are being pursued here now compared to before and for many, myself included, I think it becomes more and more apparent as we get older how little human value we have here, when we think back on the life that has been here and the short chapter that remains.

So scroll by, and stop following me around giving me thumbs downs because you disagree with something. Speak it here instead and why. I've been talking about moving the last year and a half, and you don't know my situation so it's better to just again, scroll by.
