Is retirement in Thailand a ticking time bomb?

Possessions are cumbersome and slow you down and make you stagnant.

Then instead of moving in 3 months, it takes 2 years to make the move to manage all the logistics.

Amassing a lot of physical possessions only makes sense when you know you will stay in the same place for the rest of your life, which is not that common anymore.

The powers that be, in their infinite wisdom, saw this nomadic trend in advance, and started moving media online a long time ago.

I've been here over 8 years, and my next move will be my last. I've only moved a few times after I left my parents home, as moving is a pain in the arse.

  • The video discussed an elderly man who allowed his Thai wife to manage his finances. This was a dumb decision from the start. One should never trust anyone with their money. The man then complains abo

You said you were a homebody, now you are road tripping with cds. No capiche. Makes no sense. Your phone will do it all for you.

A homebody doesn't mean you don't leave your home.

Odd you keep getting all those warnings and suspensions then!

All those? I think you have me confused with others here. Some of whom you actually go along with, which is understandable.

Moving with 50,000 cds is rare. Everybody else sold them or binned them.

You're still missing the point. This has nothing to do with you or your own brand of logic. It's what I do. if you have no possessions and are a wanderer, it doesn't matter where you live, as you can up and move anywhere at any time. Responsibilities makes moving a lot harder. There is no everybody else as you only know a few thousand people in your life out of the billions, and them only a little.

In 2005 it was common to own lots of cds. Now it is rare. Never heard of anyone flying overseas and taking 50,000 useless cds with them. You're one of a kind.

I have 50,000 CD’s on my iPhone.

Again you're assuming what anyone else alive does you don't know personally. You do this every day, thinking you know what all others are doing. Again missing the point, which is, I do what I do, you do what you do, and neither has anything to do with the other. What's useless to you is a collection of the best music ever available to me, right at my fingertips, with a lot or artwork and descriptions, in the best sounding format. Some people, like myself, love hunting and some never give it a thought. To each their own, and nothing to do with anyone else's feelings or desires.

Retirement anywhere is rather a "ticking time bomb" - it always ends in death!

Youtube has millions of them. You can do random play too or line up different artists in order. Link your phone to jukebox in gym via bluetooth. CDs are so not practical.

Who are these people flying overseas with 50,000 cds? You're an oddball.

Look who's calling another an oddball. Ever glance at your reputation? Do you think I fly back and forth many times with 50,000 CD's? I moved here once, I'll move back once, so try to figure that out. I would need a C-17 cargo plane to move them by air.

You said you spent $6,000 to take them there. Youtube has the same songs for free. CD collecting is an old hobby that most gave up. You would be the only farang in Thailand who took 50,000 cds with them.

I also said I've been collecting them since CD's came out, which is back in 1982. I'm probably the only person alive with so many, although it's possible others do, as there are millions of people who own CD's.

Again, this is like my fishing and hunting gear, a collection. I also had a wine collection once with hundreds of bottles, as millions do. Some collect paintings, animals, and if you knew many women, shoes, many of which they'll only wear once.

According to AI, 37 million CD's were sold in the US alone in 2023, a couple of years ago, and looking at platforms, all new album's coming out are on CD. Millions also buy Vinyl, new and older releases.

326m sold in 2010 so sales have fallen 90%. Most shops went broke.

Read this carefully,.......CD sales in 2025 present a mixed picture: after a sharp 22% plunge in the first half of the year, sales regained momentum to finish with roughly 33.8 to 33.9 million units sold in the U.S.. While vinyl remains the dominant physical format, CD sales saw strong quarterly gains in late 2025, driven by "collector" demand.

I'm one of those collectors, and again, you do what you do, we do what we do. Of course I understand many younger listeners use streaming and Bluetooth.

0.1 per person a year. Pretty small industry now. 10% of the population are buying 1 a year or 1% are buying 10 a year. Fringe industry.

Go back and read why I listen to CD's, as well as why many others do. There is no argument as it's a personal thing. To each their own.

Someone here 30 years has no more status than a new guy fresh off the plane.

To me, that doesn't seem morally right.

Yet, aware of all that, I stay, and so do countiess others who may or may not be as aware of this ticking time bomb.

In that part I agree, there could be some benefits for long stayers in easier procedure to renew permission of stay.

Me, I have had money-in-the-bank for 20 years retirement-extensions; invested in a house that I own – but not the land under "my house" – registered in a house book and got ID-card for foreigner; transferred and spend a reasonable amount of foreign currency every year in this and that, including paying vat; and filed my tax return for several later years.

Still, when asking for a queue-number at immigration, I will get through all the same stuff as the year before – and often a bit extra new something this year – again need to sign the same documents about accepting rules etc. After a number of year fulfilling the requirements for – whatever method of – extension of stay, it could be handled little more easy. A kind of VIP-level, which otherwise is quite common in Thailand. It could be down to showing one still have the needed funds and confirming address; for marriage extension likely kind of proof of still married to a Thai, which ought be accessible in some database system.

One thing worth to consider for some, is the possibility of permanent residency, which ease all this extension of stay-proceduere. There should also be an easier gate for some level of residency permission for those, who had fulfilled the rules in for example five or seven years.

However, when it comes to the shared video – which is correct in every aspect – it is something we should know, before deciding to stay in Thailand, on whatever kind of extension. But of course, elder people are more at risk, which is also what the video is gained at. It is worth thinking over before you sell off all at home and move out to "paradise".

I normally say that you need to consider how you plan to end your life of stay in Land-of-Smiles, because you are on your own financially, and you will always be considered as a foreign guest with no citizens rights. Are you planning to die in Thailand?

It is not different from some other countries – probably several other countries – that a foreigner needs to be self-supported, and if not obtaining some level of residency-right or a citizenship, it's bye-bye. In my home country even self supported people can be deported if the had made mistakes in their paperwork or forget to apply for something.

The other thing I normally say when people asks about living in Thailand is that you need to consider your health and your funding compared to lifestyle. Coming on a small government pension – even it might be indexed with the home-country inflation rate – might not be enough for a good life; you need some level of extra savings.

But your health is the main factor in moving out. You are on your own, and you might not be able to be insured or able to afford insurance on age, when there often is more need for service and repairs. Even a Thai partner or spouse might not be a reliable solution.

A country fellowman, Danish, reached an old age state of dementia. His younger Thai wife could or would not handle it. She kindly bought him with a one way ticket back home. His daughter in Denmark cried out for help! Her father was standing up north Isaan whit nothing but a ticket, and he would never be able to find his way to Suvarnabhumi and check-in. Luckily some country fellowmen knew a trusted Thai taxidriver that could send a taxi to pick her father up, drive him to the airport, and make sure he got the check-in counter, where some airline staff could take over. His daughter said that her father had paid for house, for all expenses for a longer number of years, and now he was just sent home with nothing – luckily there are some government support when coming back into Denmark.

Don't expect to get anything back of what you have "invested" in Thailand – the good old saying: "Never invest more in Thailand than you can afford to lose" – you really shall think about this, before moving in to a life, which is promised as: "Live in paradise for pennies on the dollar". You might end up broke.

In my POV, it's know risk – if you are not prepared for the conditions, don't move to here – and make up your mind, about how to handle accidents, old age and death, before you step into "paradise".

Yes, but those 50K CD's and 2000+ movies I like, and I have over 30 rods and 100 reels, which I use for various types of fishing. One doesn't get rid of a collection they've had for decades.

My fishing tackle alone is more. The CD's, even burned, would be 500,000 USD give or take, the movies 10,000-15,000 used. Everything else more money, but necessary, as all I'll get in a rent to own house is furniture I can replace one at a time.

500K USD for CD's ??? Okie dokey You do realize when you're gone all your stuff will end up in a yard sale and then the dumps.
