What would actually make you leave Thailand for good?

Featured Replies

As newnative indicated, most any gated community will not have significant street noise.

Most any condo with decent windows above the 12th floor should have no significant street noise.

You beat me to it. Me too... death and only death would make me leave this country. I've raised a family and have a good life here. My own native USA has gone to the dogs in a big way. It left me befo

Other than Richard Barrow, very few were drawn to Thailand for it's rolling stock. Did you mean trans?

You don't need to go to Rayong. There are lots of housing projects on Pattaya's Darkside where you will never hear loud motorcycles--and with many Pattaya is only 10 or 15 minutes away. If you want to stay beachside, I would try Wongamat. We lived right on the beach there and, again, no loud motorcycles.

Look, I dont want to seem like I dont believe you but theres been an "explosion" Of loud motorbikes just in the last 6-12 months. Before that it was barely noticeable. I don't know what caused it to multiply by ten-100 fold, I've talked to people about it, they give different answers. One guy, who I trust the most, and he's been in Thailand for 30 years he says they're all over the Thailand. I really didn't want to believe him but you know what it's probably true. I live in a condo with a large parking lot. Any times throughout the day I'll go out and walk around that parking lot, it doesn't matter what time it can be noon, 6:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. 3am, there's the constant, and I mean constant, loud drone of modified motorbikes surrounding the whole area. Another time I walked to Food Mart which takes about 45 minutes, I counted every single loud exhausts i heard. It averaged over one a minute, most were just loud but then every few minutes an EXTREMELY LOUD motorbike drove by! That walk was a f****** nightmare. My neighbor landlord doesn't want me to move out but even he has agreed that it's an epidemic. He blathers on like well it was over in Phuket too and the police tried to stop it blah blah blah he doesn't know what the f*** he's talking about. My whole point is that its happening NOW. Every single minute of every single day. I know you say the dark side is quiet, yeah sure it was quiet 18 months ago but it's not now and I do go out there to ride my quiet motorcycle. It's not like there's some miracle cut off point when you get out there all the loud bike stop no they're every f****** where. Sorry if I ran on too much about it but I just don't think you've been around here lately.

I've lived in Pattaya full-time since 2010. I've lived in Pratamnuk by VT3, Jomtien Beach by VT5 and 7, south Jomtien Beach by Lumpini Park Beach, Pattaya Beach Road by Northshore, south Pattaya by Unixx, and Wongamat by the beach near The Palm. I'm well-aware there are noisy, very loud motorcycles--and certainly wish there weren't. A recent visit to Shanghai was wonderful--all the motorcycles, and many of the cars, are electric and the city was so quiet. Loved it.

Like everyone else, I hear the noisy bikes beachside and I hear them on the Darkside. But, when I hear them, and are annoyed by them, it's mostly near main roads, beachside and Darkside. The condo we had in Wongamat was at the end of the last slow, narrow, winding road by the beachfront condos--it dead-ended at our condo and Baan Plai Haad. Not the sort of road loud motorcycles like. If a condo project is close to a main road, like Jomtien Second Road, yes, the noise is going to be a problem.

It's the same thing with the Darkside. We are in the Lake Mabprachan area and a busy road like the one that goes around the lake is very noisy with motorcycles and also loud trucks. We ruled out one housing project because it was not far enough off the road. We stood outside to check the road noise and it was unacceptable. But, we eventually found a project that was away from main roads and motorcycle noise wasn't a problem. Only very rarely did we hear a bike that was extremely loud and then only faintly and when we were outside.

We are now building another house in a different project. The project is off the main lake road but there are other projects between it and the road--and we chose a lot at the back of the project to give us even more distance. We haven't heard any traffic noise from the main road--but might faintly hear something at night if it's super loud and we are outside. We can live with that. I don't think you can eliminate traffic noise but you can minimize it enough by where you choose so it is not a problem.

Yes I would agree with you..there seems to have been a revival/ uptick of the stupidly load motorbike exhaust

pipe fashion.

I'm a bit surprised that some enterprising Thai has not come out with a mod kit (audio amp speaker set) to make the electric cars sound like a Ferrari or Lamborghini screaming along at top speed. 😋

Thanks for your quick reply you certainly have taken the right steps to at least keep your home quiet. For the most part inside my condo is pretty quiet(I do occasionally hear loud bikes in the distance)so my main issue is anytime I go outside lol. I'm currently visiting Da Nang, Vietnam. Thankfully, there are very few loud motorbikes here. Aside from the sheer volume of noise back in Pattaya/Jomtien I think I get a sense of unabated lawlessness. Massive amounts of motorbikes, cars, vans, buses, Tuk Tuks, not even trying to obey Road Rules. It's a little fun and adventuresome the first week but after that I see something like a very tiny young lady for some reason riding a small motorbike that has the loudest exhaust in the history of the human race. It's so nonsensical and unnerving I just can't f****** deal with it. Another example I kind of find humorous, when I was walking inside my compound a few weeks ago just outside the wall there was a really loud motorbike and I know there's nothing on the other side of that wall except like a field. So normally there would be no motorbike on that other side although I can't see it cuz of the wall. It went on for like 10 or 15 minutes and I realized there's just some dumb mother f***** who decided to ride his bike in the field, like a little Trail or something, for about 10 or 15 minutes then went on his way.

Bangkok is very bad, too. Pity Pattaya and Bangkok don't ban them and switch to electric bikes. Still thinking about Shanghai--it was like visiting a city 10 years in the future--or longer with how slow Thailand is.

I know, I thought about Bangkok for a while but I keep on coming up with the solution to just visit 🇹🇭/🇻🇳 as a snowbird f0r 4 months every 1 Nov- 1 Mar. I can afford Europe the other 8 months.
