Starmer Own Cabinet Revolt Deepens As Mandelson Scandal Spirals

Cracks are tearing through Keir Starmer’s Cabinet as senior ministers turn on the Prime Minister over the toxic fallout from the Peter Mandelson appointment disaster.

In a bruising parliamentary hearing, sacked mandarin Olly Robbins delivered what insiders are calling devastating testimony—laying bare an “atmosphere of pressure” from Downing Street to ram Mandelson through as US ambassador, despite serious security concerns.

Robbins told MPs there was a “very, very strong expectation” from No10 to get Mandelson “in post as quickly as humanly possible,” describing relentless chasing and a “get it done” culture around the decision.

Cabinet Splits Into The Open

The political damage escalated as senior figures broke ranks.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband openly admitted he feared the appointment would “blow up” before it was even made—revealing he had privately warned David Lammy about the risks.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also sounded the alarm, saying she was “extremely concerned” by claims Downing Street tried to push through another secret diplomatic appointment—this time for a political ally—without informing her.

‘Bullied’ Into Approval

Labour heavyweight Emily Thornberry suggested Robbins had effectively been “bullied” into approving Mandelson, adding the scandal was “very destabilising” for the government.

Behind the scenes, anger is boiling over. Reports suggest ministers are now quietly discussing who might move against Starmer—with allies of Andy Burnham emerging as a potential fallback.

Opposition Smells Blood

Opposition figures are circling.

Kemi Badenoch blasted Starmer for appointing a “known national security risk,” while Nigel Farage declared the Prime Minister “fatally weakened” and predicted his downfall was only a matter of time.

Starmer Hanging On

Despite the mounting fury, some Cabinet allies are still urging calm. Miliband insisted prime ministers are “fallible,” while Downing Street says Starmer has admitted the appointment was a mistake and apologised.

But with MPs demanding inquiries, ministers breaking cover, and trust inside government fracturing fast, the crisis is no longer just about Mandelson.

It’s about whether Starmer can survive the storm now engulfing his leadership.
