Hi, A friend of mine has recently started working at a local university. She has a WP that covers her to teach, but was not asked by the labour department for a TL. Is she legally covered by the WP or should she have a TL also and if so where would she get one?

CC,

I assume she is working upcountry. Upcountry a "certificate" called a Teachers License isn't always issued. What the Service Area of the Ministry of Education does is writing a letter to the Labour Office stating that a particular teacher is allowed to work at that particular school.

Keep also in mind the one works legally when one has a work permit whatever documents were needed to get that work permit.

When a full-time lecturer at a private university in Thailand, a TL was obtained for me by my university. It may or may not have actually been required. I am not certain of this. As a full-time lecturer at a government university, I never had to obtain a TL and know that one was not required.

If one is required, the employing institution generally obtains the TL from the MoE.

Depends on where you are. Phuket requires it. Other areas do not.

Some govt. schools require it (or required by Labour dept.) and others only for language schools.

Position of the moon and all that.

Working in universities, government and private, I've never had a teaching licence and the issue has never been mentioned by anybody.

Can you read Thai?

Yes I can :D

Never asked to obtain a license. Visit the link and see the details.

3. Who are required to have teaching licenses.

According to the Education Act, all teachers teaching in all levels of education except higher education at the degree level need to have teaching licenses by 20 August 2002.

Anyone more informed than me? :o

Probably no one is more informed than you--but someone might have to inform the MOE of what their regulations are. Seems they conveniently forget occasionally!

KhaoNiaw,

When you applied for your work permit, a letter from the Service Area of The MoE was included stating that you are allowed by MoE to teach at your school. With other words, this is your teachers license. This is your permission.

That's why I asked you: "can you read Thai"?, because perhaps you didn't notice that specific letter at the time of your application.

Greeting, Petch01
