The Ministry of Health in Vietnam is pushing for a significant expansion of its Health Insurance Fund, proposing the addition of 84 medicines, including 30 cancer treatments. This move, poised to be the largest in over eight years, targets enhancing coverage across multiple therapeutic areas such as oncology, cardiology, and diabetes. The expedited appraisal process aims for completion by the second quarter, with implementation expected by June.

Recent advancements involve newer therapies like targeted drugs and immunotherapies, which are central to the proposed inclusions. The Health Insurance Department underscores an emphasis on cancer treatment, urging pharmaceutical companies to help minimize patient costs for higher-priced medications. This development comes amid ongoing reviews to streamline coverage for serious or rare conditions that allow patients full insurance benefits without referral hurdles.

Feedback may alter some coverage areas, potentially moving treatable conditions to lower-tier facilities. There’s a noted increase in drug spending from VNĐ40 trillion in 2022 to VNĐ50.784 trillion in 2024, reflecting a growing investment in patient access to advanced medications. Trang reveals that enhanced specialized care has lessened burdens, yet tertiary hospitals still confront overwhelming demand.

Looking forward, the updated drug list promises broader health benefits, though further negotiations with pharmaceutical companies are crucial. The Ministry is keen on adjusting its policies to meet modern medical needs while addressing hospital overcrowding and ensuring efficient resource allocation.
