Saudi Arabia attacked Iran during March

Saudi Arabia quietly launched airstrikes on Iranian territory during the height of the Middle East conflict, according to officials familiar with the operation—an extraordinary escalation that exposes how close the region came to full-scale war.

The covert attacks, reportedly carried out in March by the Saudi Air Force, mark the first known direct Saudi military action inside Iran.

From Proxy Conflict to Direct Retaliation

For decades, Riyadh and Tehran fought through proxies, militias and regional influence campaigns. That threshold now appears broken.

The strikes came after waves of Iranian missile and drone attacks hit Gulf states, targeting oil sites, airports and military infrastructure. Saudi leaders concluded the kingdom could no longer rely solely on American protection.

US Shield Cracks Under Pressure

The widening conflict exposed vulnerabilities in the Gulf security order. Despite its deep alliance with United States, Saudi Arabia found itself repeatedly under fire as regional tensions spiralled.

Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted global trade and energy markets, sending shockwaves through economies already strained by war and inflation.

Gulf States Begin Hitting Back

The Saudi strikes were reportedly part of a broader regional response. The United Arab Emirates is also said to have conducted military operations against Iran, signalling a dramatic shift among Gulf monarchies once focused on containment rather than retaliation.

Yet Riyadh’s strategy remained cautious. Even as jets launched strikes, Saudi officials maintained diplomatic channels with Tehran behind the scenes.

Diplomacy Races Against Escalation

According to officials, the strikes were followed by urgent backchannel negotiations and Saudi warnings of harsher retaliation if attacks continued.

The pressure appeared to work. Iranian strikes on Saudi territory sharply declined in the days before a wider ceasefire between Washington and Tehran took hold.

Region Left on Edge

The episode reveals a hidden layer of the war—one fought not just by Israel, Iran and the US, but by Gulf powers increasingly willing to act directly.

The immediate crisis may have cooled, but the balance has shifted. Riyadh has shown it is prepared to strike across borders, while Tehran has learned the Gulf states are no longer content to absorb blows in silence.
