90 Day report and 100 Baht?

I went to renew my 90 day report this morning at the Buriram main office. Being as a friend of mine was also due, I offered to do his at the same time. Upon arrival I submitted both passports. The young assistant took them and returned them to the senior staff woman who asked me for 100 Baht for completing my friend's TM47. I said that it was a free service. She replied that if someone gets someone else to do their reporting then there is a 100 Baht charge. Have been doing 90 reports for many a year and I've never been caught on this scam. So I refused to pay. Okay you may say 'it's only 100 Baht' but for me it's the principal. 20+years of being honest.

Anyways the senior staff woman then started to threaten me by refusing to do my friends report even though she'd entered the report into my friends passport. So I sat down and told her to go ahead and delete the entry. Which would mean a 160km road trip for my friend but not my problem. The staff woman then backtract on the 100 Baht and told me to go.

Has anyone else been caught out with this scam? Or is it not a scam?

Just make the 90 days report online...

I always try to stay on friendly terms with any immigration officers I have to deal with. I look at it as long term insurance . Never know when I might need them for something.

By "completing TM47" do you mean filling in the form or was the form filled in by you. In any event most folk would pay the 100b

Question was answered in the first line of my report. Will you read the report correctly?

My bad.

In my excitement to find something interesting in your list I overlooked the word 'main'. Sorry about that.

Surprised that it was the main office, I could certainly believe it of the football stadium office.

For me it's the fact the immigration officer was openly a crook. Would you pay the money, if back in your own country, and in a government office. Nah, I don't think so.

Absolutely. Hence why I never use the place.

Just wondering why you are not doing it online

I think the 100 baht was for psychological fees for dealing with us foreigners.

Joking aside the rest have addressed the issue. Each office can set some fees for certain services independent of what other offices do.

Like most it's the 100 baht, small donation for living in Thailand is worth it to me.

Do agree with other's I seriously doubt you've been here more than a year with that combative attitude. Most of us know how to keep the poker face, be polite and not let little things bother us

Have tried it many a time but overall the permisson to do is not granted. I dunno if it's just the IO that I use but I believe IO's want feet through the door. They can't scam money on a computer.

I too have been doing TM47's online but it's hit and miss wether they accept the application here. If I can incorparate a shopping trip into my visit to Buriram then that'll do. And if I can do others TM 47's then all's good. But to get stopped after twenty odd years, without warning, then that pees me off.

I have been sucessfully doing 90 Day / Online for many, many years. They even send an e mail reminder when it is due! Honestly, I think the person who has the problem not following simple rules ... and making your life difficult ... is as close as your bathroom mirror.

And where are such fees published, other than the 1,900 BHT fee for extensions, or the 2,000 BHT for a Non O.

What's your limit before complaining. 200, 300, 500 BHT?
We've seen the cost of COR's rise because foreigners just pay it without question, and whilst they do nothing they'll continue to get away with whatever they can.
These are not official fees were discussing that go into the coffers of the Immigration department, but downright corruption lining the pockets of individuals.

The fact is 90 day reports are a free service.

And have you ever been charged for submitting online reports, or even by mail for that matter.
What makes in person reporting so different?

If you exit and re-enter the Country, the first 90 day report must be made in person, so what then if you're faced with a fee.

it's only a matter of time that this gets back to you...

better let it rest, indeed it's not worth that lousy 100 b and besides your principals don't work here, it may work elsewhere but not here

(1) I have never been charged for doing an online report (2) What makes in person reporting is, call me crazy ... 5 minutes on my laptop, verses a two hour round trip to immigration. (3) Yes, if you leave the country, the next 90 day must be in person, and following that, you can do online reporting. No fee. (4) I honestly have no idea why anyone would not use the online tool. My guess is that they might be a bit older, and not used to computers. I am 72, but worked in offices for years and very computer - comfortable.

I wish they would make it a standard amount to do any others than your own. It peeves me off when waiting in line and someone goes up with a stack and makes me wait longer to get mine done. Now I just stick to doing it online so I don’t have to go or deal with those who think they deserve special treatment. No reason to fuss over a nominal fee. Anyone that has lived here long enough knows that changes can be made in a day. No reason to fuss over it.

They do work here. About 5 years back they tried to scam me for 500 Baht to transfer my old passport details into my new one. A free service.

Sounds correct to me. I also had to pay 100 baht for my Laotian maid, when I brought her to do hers. Look at how much effort a 100 baht fee has saved your friend, for not travelling 160 kilometrs. You can also save both fee and travel time by filing it online now, if not the first 90-days report after re-entry.

What on earth are you going on about ? Just pay the 100 baht and move on.

It's topics like this that amazes me at how close to poverty an expat must be to begrudge a miniscule scam from a service provider.

Alternatively, how pompous and out of touch with reality is a migrant who expects the same standards, checks and balances as is the norm in the country from which they emigrated.

I came here because it is different from the nanny state of my birth. Of course, Thailand doesn't have all the laws and rules to prevent an official from seeking recompense for something that should be free. Welcome to South East Asia!

Not being naive, I knew there was back hand, back pocket, economy in Thailand that is technically illegal, but widely accepted. I also knew that I could make up for small scams a hundred-fold whenever I hire someone to fix the car, paint the house, deliver goods, or build a structure on our land without having to apply for permits, licenses, etc.

In my home country I'm a pensioner, here I'm a rich man who considers a 100-baht tip to be a joke.

Amazing that there at least 2 people on here who would be either unwilling or unable to pay up.

Whilst you are absolutely right, I disagree with you.

This country is institutionally corrupt. It wants to be a first world country but will not get close whilst corruption and "acceptable" scams like this are widely accepted.

Look at neighbouring countries eg Hong Kong and especially Singapore to see how far Thailand has to climb.

May I ask, are you submitting the application for 90 day report in the "window" - 15 days before due date, to 7 days before due date? If you make your application in that time frame, i believe you sill see much different (positive) results.

I must be a man of few principles, 32 years & never fretted over 100 Bht,

in particular if I need to drive 180 odd km to resubmit

The Immigration officer knew she was in the wrong being as she never carried out with her claim for the 100 Baht. In the past I've donated to the office staff when they used to have a TIPS box on their counter. Back then I willingly donated. But now it's come to this where they ask for money. That's my big beef.

At what point do your 'principals' v the price of 'scams' kick in Bob?

The more you oblige such behaviour, the more you condone and encourage such behaviour.

You must be from Bangkok.

In other parts of the Country it's still 14 days before up until the due date online.

A rich man with no principles prepared to pay whatever the asking price is.
You won't be rich for long with that mindset.

Well "yes" I guess ... I have been doing Online 90 Day for so long, that was the way I learned it, and have a perfect record of approvals. I lived in BKK for 10 years, and moved out of BKK 5 years ago to Isaan, but yeah "Old dog does not need new tricks." It is so simple, I am amazed people can't do it. For God sake, they send an e-mail REMINDER! All a user needs to do is do it right then ... but hey "Too Easy???" I keep all my information in a text file, and just copy / paste it all, since it ALWAYS works with that data. The funny thing is, I don't believe the urban legend that the approval is done all over the country in local immigration offices. It makes so much more sense to have one centralized (Bangkok) office do them all ... but hey ... "whatever sticks the cheese the pizza" 555!

Well good for you!

Now give a thought to those who don't have a computer or mobile. Maybe they have mobility issues, don't own or can drive a car. Dementia issue where once what was considered a simple task is now complicated and confusing. Perhaps other forms of disability prevent them from doing the things they did previously.

Now image a friend, willing to help because Immigration states they can, and then they attempt to charge you for what should be a free service, or submitting an extension application on behalf of a disabled person and being faced with a sudden price increase from 1,900 to 5,000 BHT.

It not always the dishonest charge, but the principal that matters. It's either free to all, or 1,900 BHT for all.

Of course you probably don't offer to help other such expats in your area, so no skin off your nose then,

Is it possible to do a 90 day report in a different province than what your registered at.
