Will never happen, when we have this as type of behavior from our leaders. What's wrong with this picture. Shameful.

There are a number of exceptions to prohibition to carry a fixed blade knife in the UK, religious beliefs of Sikhs is one.

A simple fix would be to change the law to restrict the size of the Kirpan and prohibit it being sharpend.

WRT a ban, knee jerk reactions a seldom a good idea.

I don’t believe any evidence has been presented of this atrocious murder having been racially motivated.

It became a racially aggrivated attack the moment the perpetrator said it was....watch the video 👍

There was no evidence presented at trial of this being a racially motivated attack.

I don’t watch videos, I do read court records and court reports.

I'm seeing growing calls to ban the Sikh Kirpan following a recent incident.

I disagree!

The actions of one individual should never be used to judge an entire community. By that logic, every tool, vehicle, or household item that has ever been misused would also need to be banned.

For Sikhs, the Kirpan is not just an object — it is a sacred article of faith that has been carried responsibly by generations of law-abiding people. It represents duty, justice, and the protection of others.

The answer to crime is to punish criminals. The answer is not to remove religious freedoms from innocent people who have done nothing wrong.

We must be careful not to allow fear and outrage to override fairness, common sense, and religious liberty.

On this we agree.

Take knives away and murders will use pronged forks. Take pronged forks away, and murders will find some other deadly weapon like sharpened rebar.

Personally, as a US citizen who had a Concealed Carry Permit and did carry in public, the concept that "if guns knives forks spoons are made illegal, than only criminals would have knives forks spoons' is ludicrious. I really do prefer the "Wild West" approach to Second Amendment rights. But a caveat though - I've always have been a proponent that citizens must have a minimum about of training before they buy a gun, and then additional defensive firearm training to obtain a CCP. The bad guys will get weapons legally or illegally so Joe and Jane Average Citizen need to be able to defend themselves against armed psychos. But? Welcome to the UK where Joe and Jane Average are disarmed by the government and become hunted big game for the criminals in the United Kingdom.

News from UK tabloids, he was carrying another knife which he used to stab the poor kid, apprantently he gave to his mother, she has been charged.

Now they should charge these left wing, liberal racist coppers, but I doubt.

It's a shame that the country that gave the world democracy and fair play, can not afford the same to its own citizens. Such is the teachings of the socialist nazis these days.

So you think it's OK for people of a certain religion to legally carry a murderous weapon?

There are already size requirements in effect for air travel, public transit, the courts and government buildings. Workplaces and educational facilities can restrict the size of kirpans allowed on premises. The rules are useless if not enforced and deterrent penalties applied. There is little or no enforcement on public transit.

Should the UK ban kilt knives. Old case, but.....

https://www.scotsman.com/news/robber-used-sgian-dubh-to-steal-gift-store-money-1666078

The knife used wasn't a Kirpan. This is what the defendant claimed it was, when trying to spin a story that he was defending himself. Digwa wore a genuine, tiny kirpan under his clothes, which stayed there throughout his assault. That he was a Sikh is entirely irrelevant to what happened as a result of his being on the streets with a 21cm blade. He broke the law, as would be anyone else of any or no religion.

What Digwa was carrying was a pesh-kabz, which was used historically by Sikh warriors to pierce armour. This is not an religion-exempted blade, and the Sikh community is united in not wanting an exemption extended to this. It would be like carrying a samurai sword, and claiming its ok, as you're a Buddhist.

The instinct of Reform, and Zia Yusuf, is for the state to meddle in the private affairs of religiously observant people.

Ok Mr , whatever you say... I just don't care anymore

While I think a ban would have almost zero impact on future knife crime, I believe it's time to remove these special exemptions from national laws based on minority religious beliefs. For example, Sikhs should wear motorcycle helmets like everybody else, Halal slaughter should not be exempt from animal welfare rules and nobody should carry a knife in public.

Laws should be applied equally to all citizens.

Exactly....and if this white hating racist had not been legally able to carry one, this young boy may very well could still be alive today

Sure but he was a nutter Sikh, had nothing to do with the strictures of his religion. Have we any statistics on the number of Sikhs who ever stabbed anybody with their kirpan. It would be infinitesimal.

'Ja ever need to use it in all your years of concealed permit or open carry? And why would you feel the need to carry a gun anyway? Damned things are heavy and you wouldn't want to bang a nail in with the butt end!

Skikhs are excluded from wearing helmets in the UK? Really?

Yes. Specific exemption in UK law for Sikhs who wear a turban. Been that way since 1976 when the helmet law was first introduced.

Yes, whatever I say. I don't really care whether you care anymore or have ever cared.

And I'm a Doctor, not a Mister.

That include declaring war of scythe wielding druids?

The law doesn't exempt certain bladed weapons. But religious, cultural, or ceremonial dress, or for historical displays and parade are allowable defences. Reenactors are allowed to carry swords.

So, druids can carry scythes and swords if they can demonstrate a religious purpose. Scottish Sgian Dubhs (sock knives) can also be carried for a religious purpose. Retired Gurkha soldiers can carry their Kukris at ceremonies such as Remembrance Day parades.

But maybe bread and veg knives ought to be banned?

Do me the service of explaining why you said that, unless you literally believe I have a double PhD and some sort of Polymath.

I'm pretty sure you won't and I know why.
