American Food Shortages and Skyrocketing Prices: Is this true?

Featured Replies

I am in America right now and have been for the last couple of months, unfortunately.

Haven't seen anything resembling a food shortage, but I have seen prices skyrocketing and anybody who claims that the official government numbers on inflation are even approaching reality, is living in a very thick cloud of delusion.

And you are reporting this from California, not a good representation of the entire US

No food shortages, but food prices are way over the top due to tariffs and cost of fuel to transport. To say the food prices are about the same is complete B.S. 12oz bag of coffee I used to get at

  • I'm posting from the USA. No food storages. Prices are about the same. Some of the items I buy are down. Gas is down about $1 from last month.

If i can handle Toronto, i can handle Thailand. When i go back I stay at my own property instead of my mom's basement. My return to Thailand will be glorious.

Why no talk of price gouging from the left now?

Trump is president now. Right Wing Troll Teams don't go there now & Liberals do not troll like MAGA fans do. Don't get their jollies that way.

In the US, 22 & 24, At that time the internet was chock full of breathless reports claiming Big Mac Meals selling for 18, 22, finally 28 dollars a pop. Unreal. However that was during Biden, every MAGA right wing troll type was pumping as big a lie as possible. BTW I Stopped in a MacD's to do a spot check when back. BBreakfast for 7 & change. Big Mac Meal, a little over 8. A real glimpse how far the right wing lie machine was pushing it. Make no mistake prices were up, back then as they are now, what with tariffs, the war thing and general economic malaise, but meh.

As for the OP, GG, poor geezer lives in his internet bunker 24/7. Maybe in Thailand, maybe not. If he does, he has food delivered by Grab/Shoppe/lineman, little contact with the real world, only videos flickering in his bunker.

Now isn't it time you got back to trolling Yellowtail ?! thumbsup

Historical Price Progression

  • Early 2000s: A 1-lb loaf of premium bread averaged about $1.99.

  • 2010s: Average costs for similar loaves rose to $2.99 - $3.99.

  • 2021: Oroweat varieties hovered at a base price of $3.69 - $5.09 per loaf.

  • 2022–2024: Following a surge in manufacturing and ingredient costs, base prices jumped by roughly 15% to 18%, pushing regular prices to the $5.99 mark at major grocers like Safeway and

The costs soared under JoeFlation.

And Covid supply chain interruption had nothing to do with the inflation, which was lower at the end of the Biden term than it is today.

Not sure what you're trying to say and inflation goes up every year, so yeah, it would be lower at the end of Biden administration than it is today.

And for the past 25 years according to the cost of living adjustments for social security, Biden had over 20% inflation during his administration, the highest of any administration.

There's 4 Chinese restaurants in San Antonio alone that are excellent. Owned and run by Chinese. There are also many that are buffets and terrible. Food you could use to change your oil.

How many years have you spent in China...evaluating the real Chinese cuisine available there....?

Just asking.

I've spent decades eating Chinese food prepared by Chinese. The same with many other nationalities. America has all in one place, doing the same things they did back home.

None, all going through the doors of multiple Chinese restaurants in 5 states, all owned by Chinese citizens who moved to the US. I didn't say China doesn't have good food, just that many have come to the US taking with them the cooking ability.

Even Taiwan began to have LOUSY SiChuan food when all of Generalissimo Chiang's SiChuan chefs began dying like flies, due to old age.

You would not know Chinese food if you had not traveled and lived for significant time in China.

You can take my word for it, or you can buy a ticket and travel to China.

I've had Chinese food from many Chinese areas. There are thousands of Chinese restaurants in America, serving all types of traditional Chinese food. You've been gone too long.

Chinese restaurants in the U.S. serve food that has been "Americanized" to suit local tastes.

This is the reason they prosper in America. making it just like they did back home. Some do "Americanize" it, but there are plenty that are traditional. I've met and talked to many, especially in The New York metropolitan area.

This is an incontrovertible fact of American Chinese Cuisine....

Everybody knows this....

Just ask Noam Chomsky.

He would say: Everyone knows this, and "read the literature"....

Which, exactly, are your go-to restaurants in NYC...?

Even Chinese know that the NYC restaurants serve GLOP, compared to what is served up in China.

How many Chinese people do you know who are fresh off the boat?

Are you able to converse in Mandarin or Cantonese?

I'm sorry, it's been quite a while since I was in NYC, but one restaurant we went to a lot was the Peking House close to my home. From China, and packed every day. Lake Tung Ting Shrimp one of my favorites. They were old school, already in their late 50's. Peking Duck was ordered by people daily there. The people i talked to, owners and chefs, were there for years. I could order in Chinese when I lived back in New Jersey in the 80's, when I left to Texas. I've had glop Chinese, as there are many restaurants that serve buffets and it's mass production. When you go to a non buffet place, it's made to order and fresh.

If I had to eat Chinese food in New York, then I would restrict my selection of restaurants to CHINA TOWN.....only....

I love China Town, and just being there might compensate for the less authentic Chinese cuisine experience.

That's where we went, and where a chef that ended up at The Peking House got his start, after he got off the boat. Tony was his name.

I've been to China a number of times for work, and did not think the food was all that.

Agree, mostly inedible and nothing like the food from a western Chinese takeaway.

Back home Chicago now and it’s getting insane expensive to do anything fun. Going out drinking, concerts, golf all through the roof. I paid $23 for one draft beer at a concert at Wrigley field last week. America sucks now, glad I experienced it when it was genuinely fun, reasonable, and not run by a con man.

Was it a Junk that he got off of?

Chinese Junks are amazing.

Have you ever had the chance to board a Chinese Junk in the Kowloon harbor....by the way?

Actually, I have heard, from many, that this is true.

Cheap hobbies, what were once cheap in the past decades, have become luxury pursuits.

Thankfully, there is always reading, curling up by a wood fire, in the woods, with a good book, and a mosquito net, is still cheap.

But, the cops might hassle you if you are not careful, even if you are camping on public land, on median strips.....on most major US highways....

Choose your eateries wisely, is my best advice to you.

And, I do not mean: A number of times. I meant, one really needs to LIVE THERE......

I wouldn't think they would use a Chinese Junk to cross the ocean. How could i board a Junk if I've only been to Beijing by airplane?

It's pathetic that people like you act like 21% cumulative inflation under Joe Biden never happened. This was devastating to the common man.
