No doubt that there was a large 'anti-Starmer' angle to this vote but that doesn't explain why an area, which as recently as last month voted Reform/ Restore in large numbers, has returned a Labour candidate with more votes than all the other candidates combined where there was also an increase in voter turnout.

Perhaps the answer is simple. Although many posters in this thread refuse to accept it, the fact is that Andy Burnham is popular in the North West. A recent YouGov poll showing 71% of respondents in the wider North West region believe he has done a good job as mayor and his election is a reflection of that popularity.

Whether Burnham can extend that popularity and success to the national stage remains to be seen.

I was in the UK February and March, staying in cities, towns and villages.

I even made it to Lowe’s constituency, though it wasn’t a highlight so I went up the coast away to stay in Blakeney at the Blakeney Hotel (superb) and dinner at The Moorings (sublime cold water seafood).

Try not to miss these if you’re ever out that way.

Go register on a statistical data analysis course and comeback when you understand the problems with extrapolating from localized datasets across a whole nation.

The term ‘there appear to have been’ is a clue to the fact the extrapolation isn’t proof of anything.
