Cabinet Revolt Grows As Starmer Given Deadline To Quit

Ministers Warn PM His Time Is Up

Keir Starmer is facing the gravest threat to his leadership yet after senior cabinet allies reportedly told him he has until the end of the weekend to set out a timetable for his departure or risk being forced from office by his own party.

The pressure intensified after Andy Burnham's commanding victory in the Makerfield by-election, a result many Labour MPs now see as a mandate for a change at the top.

One cabinet minister who had previously stood by the prime minister reportedly described Starmer's departure as "inevitable", while growing numbers of MPs are openly discussing a transition of power.

Burnham Emerges As Prime Minister-In-Waiting

Burnham is expected to arrive in Westminster on Monday for talks with Labour MPs amid mounting expectations that he could become prime minister within weeks.

Supporters believe as many as 200 Labour MPs could back his nomination if a leadership contest becomes unavoidable. However, Burnham's camp is understood to favour a swift handover rather than a divisive internal battle.

The Greater Manchester mayor's supporters argue his by-election triumph demonstrated an appetite among voters for a different style of leadership and a stronger focus on neglected regions outside London.

Cabinet Preparing For Showdown

Starmer attempted to rally support during a call with cabinet ministers on Friday, insisting he intended to fight on.

But concern within government appears to be growing. Reports suggest Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed reservations during the discussion, while senior figures including Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood have previously urged Starmer to establish a timetable for departure.

Some ministers fear the government risks descending into paralysis if uncertainty continues.

"There comes a point where you ask what matters more," one cabinet source reportedly said. "Loyalty or delivering your agenda?"

Labour Veterans Join Calls For Exit Plan

The pressure is no longer confined to serving ministers.

Labour heavyweights David Blunkett and Harriet Harman have both suggested the party needs clarity over its future leadership.

Senior party figures reportedly believe that if Starmer refuses to act over the weekend, ministers could force the issue at Tuesday's cabinet meeting.

Comparisons are already being drawn with Boris Johnson's final days in office, when ministerial resignations rapidly destroyed his authority.

Starmer Loyalists Prepare For Leadership Fight

Despite the mounting pressure, Starmer's allies insist he still has options.

A briefing note circulating among loyalist MPs argues Burnham has yet to face serious national scrutiny and warns that a leadership campaign could expose weaknesses in his record.

The prime minister's supporters are already preparing for a possible contest, reportedly securing office space, organising campaign plans and raising more than £100,000 in donations.

Some MPs are even discussing Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones as an alternative candidate should Starmer eventually stand down.

PM Refuses To Back Down

Speaking after Burnham's victory, Starmer made clear he has no intention of walking away quietly.

"If there is a contest," he said, "then yes, I will run."

The prime minister warned that a leadership battle could plunge Labour into chaos and insisted the party must remain focused on governing.

But with Burnham's momentum growing, cabinet nerves fraying and MPs increasingly looking beyond the current leadership, Starmer faces what could be the decisive weekend of his premiership.
