Could You Ever Become a Sex Worker?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Following on from one of my previous topics, I found myself wondering about this question from the other side.

Could you actually do the job yourself?

But before anyone starts saddling up their moral high horse, that is not what I am talking about.

I mean practically.

A lot of people look at sex work and see easy money. They see somebody earning in a night what another person might earn in a week or even a month or two. From the outside it can look like a very favorable arrangement. But I have always thought that depends entirely on whether you could actually tolerate the work itself.

Personally, I could not.

Not because of morality, social stigma or because I think there is anything wrong with people who choose to do it. I simply cannot imagine forcing myself to be physically intimate with people I found completely unappealing, maybe even physically revolting, purely because money was involved. In fact, the more I think about it, the less appealing the whole idea sounds.

Imagine having to wake up every morning knowing that later that day you may have to spend hours with some stranger pretending to be interested in somebody you would never voluntarily spend ten minutes with under normal circumstances, let alone take your clothes off and let them interact with you sexually.

Not only interested.

Interested, attentive, charming, patient, and enthusiastic. That sounds less like easy money and more like an acting career with unusually demanding performance reviews, but actually it's a lot worse.

Whenever people describe sex work as easy money, I find myself wondering whether they are focusing entirely on the money part and not enough on the work part. Because if the job was genuinely that easy, a lot more people would be doing it. Perhaps that is the real dividing line.

Some people look at the financial reward and think the sacrifice is worth it. Others look at the sacrifice and decide no amount of money would make it worthwhile. As for me, I cannot even pretend to enjoy small talk with people I dislike. So the idea of taking the concept significantly further for financial reasons sounds utterly exhausting.

In Thailand, it is typically an overweight Western man paying to be with a Thai woman. Many of these men can be quite disgusting. If the roles were reversed, I wouldn't consider banging an older, overweight woman for money. The truth is, good-looking women have no difficulty finding partners. My business opportunities would be limited.

Of course I could.

Not these days of course but there was a time when I walked into a bar and the old queens swooned.

Sex work in unregulated environments is very dangerous for the hos both around disease and violence.

When it's organized like in a Nevada cathouse it's just another mass market industrial job.

You left out the creepy men who pay to be with the unattractive male sex workers. Very prevalent in Thai towns.

It's even far more organized in Europe. Mainly Germany and the Netherlands.

Boyztown walking street jomtiem is a very nice area during the day, what's it like nights? Many European tourists stay there, many Chinese too of late.

If sex is "work" then sitting on your ass twiddling your thumbs on a console makes you an "athlete"

False assumptions lead to false conclusions.

I did meet a girl who was in massive debt. She tried the bars for a few days, but said she couldn't do it.

So you paid her?

Actually I met my wife of 25 years in a Beach Road bar. She told me she was only giving it 7-10 days to find a partner. Two days later she met me and the recent is history. The younger ones go to Pattaya on a gash for cash basis. Where as the more mature ones are seeking security with a long time partner.

Not all women are as puritanical as men believe them to be.

There's a whole range on the scale. Some women are best suited for long-term marriage, other women are best suited to work in the bar scene. If they were hitched up with one man, they wouldn't be faithful anyway. They probably are not the best mothers .... really, the ecosystem does not only exist out of desperation, but many women are more suited for this environment than traditional marriage.

Just like many men cannot stay faithful to one woman. And these men are probably better off not getting married at all rather than ruin a woman's life.

Unlike you, I don't need to pretend I'm a Catholic Priest who has never gone to a massage with a happy ending.

So she told you her life history? Then gave you 25 happy endings for money.

Congratulations on the successful marriage.

In the nineties they would all say to new punters that they had only been in the bar two days, and nearly half the time it was even true. They moved bars so often that years of bar work still counted as two days in one bar or another. Not lying, just clever marketing, as long as nobody asked them about the rest of their time in the trade.

I've been with many Thai girls, as young as 16, 17yo. in the early days. Most were very shy, only having been with the boyfriend they fell in love with and most had a child to support now the father had abandoned her and baby.

These petite young girls don't choose to work in the sex industry, they are force because working in Big C and lotus does not pay enough to support her, her child and her child's carer. So now she is forced to move upto 100km from home to seek employment in the big city.

As a father of girls, it would break my heart knowing she must head of to Pattaya or similar to work in the sex industry because I was unable to take care of her.

In my youth I thought about moving to Canberra to get involved in the porn industry but I find it difficult to have sex with a woman I have no feelings for.
