The European Union's move toward hardline immigration policies and expedited deportations is a direct reflection of the global shift toward the strict enforcement, America First style of the Trump brand.

Cling to your sweet memories because that's all you'll ever have.

Buh-bye to Trump Delusional Syndrome. It's been one helluva ride.

The Trump brand has influenced the globalist so much so .Even the far left Guardian rag columnists claiming ICE like detensions .

Google ai overview:

"The Guardian reported that critics accused new EU migration reforms, involving increased detention and "return hubs," of introducing ICE-style enforcement to Europe. Following the June 2026 vote, the measures drew intense scrutiny regarding stricter deportation procedures".

What has happened to Rutte? When he was PM of the Netherlands he cut a statesmanlike figure. Nowadays he is so far up Trump's arsenal that I half expect Rutte's head to appear out of Trump's mouth.

Judging from the international left, everything is Trump's fault, while completely ignoring the cold, hard reality of global geopolitics, Europe got shamed into stepping up.

It's not just the international left who are mired in bias. Judging by the reactions of the international right-wing cohort, everything Trump does is the work of a genius and everything he touches turns to gold.

However, irrespective of the rights and wrongs of Trump's actions - and imo he was right to call on Europe to contribute more to NATO - I find Rutte's obsequious behaviour in Trump's presence nauseating.

  • Author

For years, European leaders treated NATO like a free security pass, consistently failing to meet their promised defense spending targets because they assumed the U.S. would always foot the bill. The GOAT /Trump didn't break that system,he just called their bluff.

I think Rutte knows how to play trump. You must recall how he got trump pleased in Greenland, without actually giving him anything

Rutte knows that a leader’s job isn't to wish for a different American president, it’s to deal with the one who is currently holding all the cards.

Not sure some damage to some pool is worth flouncing over. Time for some to finally address their irrational hate and obsession over Mark Rutte's daddy?

I agree with riclag but there are other ways and means of dealing with Trump without prostrating yourself at his feet, as Rutte does, as demonstrated by Carney, Meloni and others.

The GOAT/Trump Effect:

He takes out heinous drug runners and enforces past administrations bounty agreements on Maduro and the left vilifies him for it.

The GOAT/Trump Effect also means confronting a regime that has sown terror and instability across the region for 47 years, while every major leader in the world agrees they should not have nuclear weapons , and the left still vilifies him for it. All this with many attempts in diplomacy .

Love him or hate him, Trump actually moves against real threats that previous administrations only talked about. The results speak louder than the media outrage.Side note ,lets not forget who the media aligns with.

I'll leave it to others to debate whether Trump is the GOAT President wrt the effect of his policies domestically. However, I think that his fanboys will struggle to find many international observers who consider the effects of the majority of his policies internationally to be anything other than disastrous.

He may have cut a statesmanlike figure, but you need to ask Dutch people how he was as during his 14-year gig. Praised for his humility, pragmatism and an ability to secure coalitions and alliances. He also came out of several scandals as 'teflon' coated.

His 'daddy' comment was from last summer when everyone was still getting used to Trump 2. More recently, the gild has come of that lily with the Italian PM publicly chastising Trump for persistently lying. I believe Chancellor Merz was one of the first to put his head above the parapet on critical comment of the US president last year. He took some flack for that, and now appears to be back-pedalling most of the time.

As for Rutte, I believe some of his more recent comments about Trump's criticism of NATO and the EU (he probably doesn't know the difference), can be framed in a less effusive light. He acknowledges that under Trump's criticism, most NATO partners have become more self-reliant or less-dependent on their American partner, which is good. On the other hand, he won't be bullied. I believe he is wily enough to realize that the USA isn't Trump and vice-versa.

He's been around the block long enough to know that he's dealing with Trump and NOT the President of the USA.
