While it might be possible for Europe to stand on its own defence-wise in the future, it remains dependent on the US in the short to medium term. Therefore, I accept that Rutte has a difficult job in satisfying both Europe and the US, and that dealing with the narcissistic 'Man-Child' who is President of the US makes it harder still. It might be argued that Rutte has been largely successful to date, but it appears that Europe is getting fidgety about him.

In any event, does Rutte have to be quite so obsequious to Trump? I would argue that the example of Carney especially suggests otherwise.
