FCC orders review of Disney licences after Jimmy Kimmel joke

Irrespective of the public good, or what all Americans might want to watch.

That's the issue.

Nobody has to watch it -- but this is about license renewal and any decision by the FCC commissioners can be challenged in DC Appeals Court.

But the current call for the review and early renewal application of the 8 ABC owned station licensees is based on a discrimination/DEI issue, not the Kimmel dustup.

Generations of Presidents provided fodders for comedians. All Presidents will just laughed it off but not thin skinned toddler Trump. Trump as a President had used this kind of morbid language against his perceived enemies like the 2nd amendment language on Hillary and saying that the only good democrats is a dead democrat. Kimmel is a comedian and that was a joke but for Trump as the President to use such language is inexcusable.

It is a license that is issued for the public good, not to further a particular ideology. Why should Americans that support Trump have to watch this kind of thing?

Of course, the weak, pathetic Kimmel went on and claimed it was about their age difference, not the at least three assassination attempts, so he's a liar, he's not funny, and he's weak.

Let Kimmel make a monkey joke about the feckless Obama and see how long he's on the air.

Either change the channel or simply turn off your TV. You don't "have to watch this kind of thing."

My favorite regarding the reserved native-Vermonter "Silent Cal" Calvin Coolidge:

Dorothy Parker’s remark when told that Calvin Coolidge was dead: How can they tell?

The FCC order directs the company to file licence-renewal applications for all of its licensed TV stations within 30 days.

The reviews could lead to the revocation of the stations' licences to broadcast, an action the commission has not taken in more than 40 years, Reuters reported.

In a statement, Democratic FCC commissioner Anna M Gomez called the FCC's order "a political stunt".

"This is unprecedented, unlawful, and going nowhere," she wrote on X. "Companies should challenge it head-on. The First Amendment is on their side.

NB from the actual FCC order: Specifically, the FCC has been investigating Disney’s ABC stations for possible violations of the Communications Act of 1934 and the FCC’s rules, including the agency’s prohibition on unlawful discrimination.

That was a brilliant comment JK is very funny…PS there are many who will be saying , if only, and then the world would be a more happy place …

It is a fascinating take to call a "death wish" joke brilliant. I suppose if your bar for "humor" has dropped all the way to the floor, wishing for a woman to be widowed is a real comedic peak. But let’s be honest: there’s nothing "funny" about a multi-millionaire bully using his platform to normalize political violence. It’s lazy, it’s cruel, and it’s a total "system failure" of decency.

And as for your "if only" comment—it’s always the ones who claim to want a "happier world" who are the quickest to celebrate the idea of someone dying. You aren't wishing for happiness; you’re wishing for destruction because you can’t handle a different political opinion.

If the only way your world becomes "happy" is through the death of others and the "poor taste" of a late-night hack, then your version of happiness is pretty dark. Real "exquisite" wit builds something; it doesn't just bark for blood from the sidelines. Maybe try holding your entertainers to a standard higher than a schoolyard bully, and we’d actually get to that "happier world" you’re pretending to care about.

P.S. Johnny Carson was actually funny.

To compare the "fodder" of the past to what Kimmel is doing today is like comparing a surgical scalpel to a sledgehammer. Previous generations of comedians—led by legends like Johnny Carson—actually had talent. They used wit and timing to skewer policy, not "morbid language" to normalize the death of their opponents.

Calling out a "death wish" joke isn't being "thin-skinned"; it’s called having a standard for public decency. There is a massive operational difference between a President using tough rhetoric in a political campaign and a broadcast licensee using the public airwaves to broadcast "hateful vitriol" disguised as humor. If you can't see the difference between a political metaphor and a host literally joking about a wife becoming an "expectant widow" just days after a real-world assassination attempt, then your bias has completely blinded your judgment.

No one has to watch anything but sexual harassment videos.

If it is for the public good, and it offends a third of the population, it is a poor choice.

LOS ANGELES, April 28 (Reuters) -- Senate Commerce Committee chair Ted Cruz, a Republican, criticized FCC Chairman Brendan Carr's action on Disney.

"It is not government's job to censor speech and I do not believe the FCC should operate as the speech police," he told Punchbowl News in comments confirmed by his office.

Let the haters watch it on cable or online. The public airwaves are for everyone, not just Trump-obsessed leftists.

Kimmel used to be funny, but his ratings are in the toilet and all he can do to boost his ratings is pander to the Trump obsessed haters.

Any Ilhan Omar banging her brother or recalculating her net worth jokes?

Eric Swalwell banging his staff jokes?

Kamala drunk jokes?

Somali corruption jokes?

Katie Porter Nazi jokes?

Seems like a lot of great material out there.

I don't see you opine on Trump's morbid language against his enemies. A joke is a form of oral literature intended a provoke amusement and laughter. In this case, Kimmel use a wordplay to deliver a punchline and amuse his audience. That is the defination of a joke. Should not be taken literally or even seriously. It is just typical Trump who said the worst thing but can't take even a joke. He is the President and his words have more consequences than a comedian like Kimmel. I enjoy the banter between Obama and Kimmel who had used some pretty crude jokes about Obama.

Trump does not have an FCC license, and no one is compelled to air it, much less watch it. .

That said, Trump's language and behavior often disgust me, which I've said countless times, but Trump is taken to task for it.

You want to be outraged about Trump's language but use it to give a pass to everyone else.

I did not deflect at all. I pointed out a strawman.

I see your symptoms are not improving though.

The fact of the matter is, that the Trump-obsessed haters do not care about cruelty, vulgarities, discussing behavior, humiliation and terrorism, as long as it is directed at the people they don't like.

To them, Melaniia Trump being portrayed as an ignorant prostitute it hilarious. Mitchell Obama as a monkey is the end of the world.

Trump saying he is not sorry a man that spent years trying to ruin Trump's life was dead was the end of the world to the Trump-obsessed haters. Thousands of people posting videos online wishing Trump dead and being sorry the shooter missed, the Trump obsessed haters applaud that.

Kimmel's joke was standard fare for an old guy with a much younger wife.

Nothing to do with the assassination attempt.

You would have to stupid that they had any relevance to each other.

Some of course are stupid, there is no getting around that.

Simply speechless that you simply don’t get it or just you being a recalcitrant. You comparing media coverage of a President with a comedian with a FCC license aired in selected networks.

Kimmel made the joke several days before the gun incident at the Hilton.

Old guy? He is 16 years younger than Clint Eastwood. The joke was about the shootings. Only a fool would believe Kimmel's excuse.

Once again, Kimmel's Melania joke was made on April 23rd, several days before the Hilton shooting, on the 25th.

And after the other (at least) three assassination attempts, yes?

And I noticed you said "gun incident" rather than assassination attempt. Do you think it was staged? Do you think the others were staged as well?

As has been said it was before not after the incident.

As may have been said Trump made a very similar joke yesterday when he noted to the press jokingly there's no way they will be married as long as his parents who were married 63 years. Implication being due to his age.

Trump joking about his young wife outliving him is not the same as Kimmel joking that Melania's husband is expected to be killed.

I 100% support Kimmel's free speech rights.

Regulation of public airways for the public good has nothing to do with free speech.
