Tourist Killed in Phuket Motorcycle-Van Collision

Looked like he tried to steer out of it rather than lean into it.

You have to wonder if he had a motorcycle licence or not.

It is very sad but keeps on happening.

How do you come to that conclusion, is there a video?

The problem with excessive speed is that eventually you get to the point where you can take that corner only on the "race line", and if you don't hit the line or you turn in too late or too early, you'll go off the road. The same goes for, if you're simply too fast for that corner. The other problem is the pillion rider. If they don't lean into the corner exactly the way you do or they start leaning the other way, it will pull you off course as well.

Exit: I've just seen the video. He totally missed the brake point and then failed to turn in. I'd chalk that up to inexperience and lack of attention. I used to ride bikes myself and once you're fully on the brake, it's quite hard to lean in, so you just gotta go off the brake, which is counterintuitive at this point, and then fully commit to the lean, which is a big ask for someone who's a beginner rider. What also complicates that is the pillion rider, the additional mass makes the bike harder to move. He just didn't pay attention to what the road was doing and he had one second to get proactive and failed.

Just like the locals, then. But let's just blame the foreigners.

Well, it was a foreigner who crashed, why would they point out that the locals do the same as well in this context?!

The video shows the rider completely missed the bend in the road

it didn't look like going to to fast just failure for whatever reason to follow the left hand bend in the road R.I.P

Do you have a link to the video? I don't see a video link in this article.

Thank you!

Yeah, I totally agree. He missed the brake point and then just failed to turn in. Probably a combination of being an inexperienced rider and lack of attention.

Place speed bumps near and in curve roadway?

Worst possible thing to do, unless the outcome is more crashes and injuries.

But the Thais weren't criticising one foreigner. "Some residents allege that tourists often ride at high speeds or use rental vehicles without adequate skills, raising safety concerns." Tourists plural.

How quick Thais are to be critical of others driving and riding skills. What are the road death tolls for Thailand again?

Back when I was there, the road could be slick even on good days. There was oil, rubber residue and gravel that could easily result in a loss of control. They don't clean roads here and the debris builds up.

Residue washed from the trees and wet leaves around too. Always felt it risky on Koh Chang too with many sharp bends and steep hills.

I'm assuming it was the male who was driving and he just didn't negotiate the turn at all !

All boozed up? Is that the woman flying off over the guardrail?

RIP, horrible.

Well, there are a lot of foreigners who ride their bikes like crazy and it's not like no one knows that some of the Thais ride like crazy as well.... you're reading way too much into it!

Only some of the Thais? A good fair proportion and two three or four up. Just more finger pointing by Thais at foreigners in general. Not bikes but cars, how many died in that recent tragic pick up crash? Was there any finger pointing by Thais, I doubt it.

That's awful to watch. The rider entered the turn carrying too much speed.

Well, if you don't like it that Thais point out that some foreigners drive like c**** then go back home....

And no helmet on the woman who died? No chance to survive then.
