A six-year-old boy has died after being attacked by a pet monkey that was tethered beside a family home in Sichon district, Nakhon Si Thammarat. The child suffered severe injuries to his chest, lung and leg, and later died in hospital.

The incident occurred on the morning of 6 June 2026 at Ban Khao Yuan Thao village, Moo 4, Thep Ratcha subdistrict, Sichon district. Police were alerted to the attack by investigators from Sichon Police Station after reports that a child had been seriously injured by a monkey.

The victim was identified as Dek Chai Ekkarat, known as Nathan, aged six. He was a pupil at Ban Khao Yuan Thao School. Following the attack, he was rushed to Sichon Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

According to information gathered at the scene, the attack took place at a village grocery shop owned by the boy’s grandfather, Mr Charoon. The grandfather had kept the monkey for several years, having raised it since it was a young animal.

The monkey was reportedly not used for coconut harvesting and was kept as a pet. It was tethered beside the house using a long rope attached between two trees, with a wooden beam installed between them to allow the animal to move and play within the confined area.

Investigators were told that Nathan walked past the monkey on the morning of the incident and was not aware of the danger. The monkey then reportedly lunged at him, biting him and causing fatal injuries.

The incident has shocked the local community, where the monkey had been kept for many years. Authorities were informed of the circumstances surrounding the attack and began documenting the case.

Authorities reported that the monkey remains tethered at the same location where the attack occurred. No further action regarding the animal was yet reported by authorities, as the investigation continues.

maybe the boy teased the monkey before the attack ! Did nobody hear the screams of the boy in the nearby houses or Grocery Shop ?

I hate monkeys. I don’t trust them.

I can’t believe that the family didn’t warn and educate the poor child to give that animal a wide berth.

Monkeys are great when they are small pets.

but once they get into adolescent's, they can turn into the true killers they can be.

Poor lad. They are horrible things and, much like chimps, can’t really be tamed. My lad was bitten by one as a kid and had to do all the rabies jabs. This was a pet apparently, but in places like Lopburi, Songkhla and Krabi, they run riot in packs, coming into towns and causing mayhem. Enough with the Buddhist ‘everything is sacred’ tat. Yes, in their own environment, but elsewhere en masse they should be culled. Even the soi dogs hate the little f*kers.

Caged, chained, tethered wild animals seem to eventually 'lose it', and attack their 'keepers'. Don't know how this surprises anyone.

The best monkey remedy is a Remington .223. Leave them in zoos or in the wild. They are dangerous.

The monkey had no problems with adults but kids are cruel, so this one hated children

The article doesn't say anything about the incident, such as why the boy was so close to the tethered monkey or whether he was doing anything to it. In any event, I hope the monkey is not killed in response to this attack.

The fear of monkeys is called pithecophobia. This term is derived from the Ancient Greek word for ape or monkey. I also hate them especially when they ook and eek after a touchdown.

Monkeys and apes are not pets and can be extrememly dangerous for no reason... only a retarded muppet would do what this shop owner did.

Victim blaming? My daughter had a very similar incident at a grocery store in Singapore. She certainly didn't tease it. We didn't even know it was there until it leapt on her back and started biting her! Fortunately the owner came to the rescue and no serious harm was done to her.

If it was my son it killed the monkey wouldn't have lived 5 minutes or a man come to that.

If it were anyone killed by anything, I wouldn't want anything killed for revenge. I'd need to know the whole story, whether anyone was harming anything, so anything was acting in self-defense. If the details of the whole story were reversed, and anything attacked anyone unprovoked, then I would consider having anything put down in defense of all other anyones.

No monkey, of any kind, should be kept as a pet. They may, however, be held in large cages with trees in a zoo, otherwise they belong in the wild.

We are all different but I know how I would have reacted if it were my 6yr old son.

I'm a pacifist vegetarian but a biter has to be put down, dog or monkey. Too much danger to people. There's a nasty one with a muzzle I walk by. Why would anybody keep such an animal?

Yea, that's the way, the self entitled human, who has less right to the planet than animals. Who are forever encroaching on animal habitats, denying them their right to freedom as nature intends, even catching and tethering them, which is not something they have a say in, suggest killing them. One would think that animals are the more intelligent of the species.
